本世紀中葉江南一個農村﹐染坊老板楊金山為了傳宗接代。續弦娶了年輕姑娘菊豆為妻﹐楊金山上了年紀又身患暗疾﹐沒有生育能力﹐日子一長﹐菊豆偷偷與他的養子楊天青產生了愛情並生下一子天白。四歲時﹐天白無意將癱了下肢的楊金山撞入染池淹死。
由於吃人的禮教﹐菊豆與楊天青依然過著表面嬸侄關係的生活。漸已成人的天白怒殺與母“通奸”的生父楊天青。菊豆萬念俱灰﹐縱火燒掉楊家世代相傳的祖業“楊家染坊”。

INTRODUCTION
This story happened in the middle of the 20th century.
Yang Jinshan, a village dye-house boss, remarried a young pretty girl called Ju Dou as his second wife in order to produce a male heir to continue his family line. Unluckily, he was sterile for he was four years old, Tianbai accidentally bumped Yang Jinshan (who was then paralyzed) into a dye pool and he was drowned.
Shackled with cannibalistic feudalethics, Ju Dou and Yang Tianbai Killed his own father Yang Tianqing because of their incest. Abandoned herself to despair, Ju Dou Burned Yang's Dye-house"which existed for generations."

Near Perfect Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I first saw this film some years ago and having recently bought it on dvd it has lost none of its appeal. The story is set in a dye house where the turning of the creaking wheels and machinery are set against the glorious colours of the dyed fabrics that billow and flap in the wind. The history of this old building underlines the character of the owner, a grouchy old man who takes a young wife to gain an heir. The owners nephew, who works with him, spies on the wife who becomes aware of him watching her. She inevitably falls in love with him. Meanwhile the husband suffers an accident and the nephew saves him when he could leave him to die, choosing duty over emotion. By this time the wife is pregnant. The child is born, to the delight of the cuckolded husband. A few years pass. The owner and his supposed son become close and the son determines to destroy his mother's relationship with the nephew, his real father. The husband accidentally drowns in a vat of dye and the son, by now a malevolent presence murders his own father. In a final act the dye works burns down.
The photography is stunningly beautiful and at times close and restricted, echoing the situation of the characters who are played excellently by the cast. As ever Gong Li shines throughout and even the lad playing the son convinces the viewer of his violent intent. Definitely one of my top ten all time films.
