Professional Review of "Juon 2 (Korean Version)"

June 7, 2006

This professional review refers to JU-ON: The Grudge 2 (Hong Kong Version)
Toshio (Yuya Ozeki) and his grudge-bearing mother Kayako (Takako Fuji) return in Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On: The Grudge 2, another terrifying entry in the highly successful Ju-On franchise. The film centers on Kyoko Harase (Noriko Sakai), a young actress who finds herself typecast in a slew of horror movies. To make matters worse, an Unsolved Mysteries-type TV show has invited Kyoko to appear on their program. The film crew plans to spotlight a supposed haunted house, which, of course, turns out to be the cursed home of the previous Ju-On films. Kyoko reluctantly agrees to do the program, and everything seems fine, that is - until later when crew members start dropping like flies! Although Kyoko survives a near-fatal car accident, her fiance isn't so lucky. And tragically, the beautiful actress even suffers a miscarriage. Or does she? A trip back to the doctor reveals that Kyoko is indeed still pregnant, but with what? And why hasn't she died like all the others?

At the time of this writing, there have been two direct-to-video movies, two feature films, and an American remake. Not only that, but director Takashi Shimizu is said to be prepping both The Grudge 2 and Ju-On: The Grudge 3. Considering how horror films depend primarily on a "fear of the unknown," can a certifiable horror franchise continue to scare us?

In a word, yes. But the kinds of shocks that Ju-On: The Grudge 2 achieves are, for the most part, pretty cheap. The pasty little ghost boy Toshio elicits plenty of creepy shocks when he pops up unexpectedly throughout the film, but he's more tragic than terrifying. His vengeful mother Kayako, on the other hand, fares a little better in the chills department, but her power, too, suffers a bit due to overexposure. So how can a horror movie succeed when its very premise seems to have run its course? Simple: reinvent the formula.

And that's exactly what Shimizu does in this sequel. But instead of just throwing out all the rules (which would frustrate audiences), the film creates a new twist that makes sense within the story. That isn't to say the film isn't without its faults. Certain plotlines go nowhere, and some scenes are unintentionally hilarious, but overall, Ju-On: The Grudge 2 makes compelling ninety minutes of entertainment. Although the film could have been a bland rehash of the first film, Takashi Shimuzu seizes the opportunity to make this sequel an exercise in cinematic creativity. And hey, you can't begrudge him for that.

Terrifying!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Even for a horror movie fanatic like me, this was still terrifying for me! I watched the first part, and thought it was really scary, and the first moment I learnt there will be a sequel I couldn't hold back my excitement. But NOTHING could prepare me for the terror that was played on the TV screen when I watched this movie! I personally love horror movies, and this movie certainly scared the hell outta me! This is so much scarier than the first movie and 'The Ring'! So overall, if u want horror at it's best, then I definitely recommend this movie!

JUON 2 is Terrible Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
This movie is TERRIBLE. I spent the entire time waiting for the plot to finally develop and right when I thought it would, the end credits begain to roll. There were too many characters thrown in together all simply connected by the curse on the house. The supposedly scary scenes were ridiculous, laughable, and became redundant and predictable. There was no climax. The introduction draged. The entire movie was far too confusing, which made it boring. The characters were flat and the acting was poor (the characters depiction of fear was forced and elementary). I would not recomend this movie EVER.

A good Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Hi, I too love horror movies, and especially since is from an asian horror, I never in my dreams would I thought I would like it, especially when you have to read subtitles, BUT I DO!!I watch this movie and wow, what a movie, it is scary, and a mystery, No one is ever going to resove the murders..because is bigger than you..Now, I'm use to the american gost stories..and in the end of the movies, most of them win...not this one, if you like happy endings for get about it..it's no happening here, like I said, the gost in JU-ON wins..all the time. and has no mercy, not even to poor old ladies..
so get it, you won't regret it.
