YesAsia Editorial Description
After all the line-up arrangements were completed, Shiina Ringo and her ambitious band Tokyo Incidents were ready to hit the stage again in the end of May. Now playing with guitarist Ukigumo and Izaiwa Ichiyo on keyboards, they performed the brand new song "Mirror Ball" (Track 9) as well as 21 other favorites during their "DOMESTIC!" Just Can't Help It tour at the NHK hall. Among the material Shiina and her band performed this time were Tegami ("Letter" - Track 10), Himitsu ("Secret" - Track 5) and Honnou ("Natural Ability" - Track 14) from the last album Adult. Also featuring songs from their praised debut album Kyouiku ("Education") including "Service" (Track 11), Just Can't Help It allows fans to experience some of the band's best hits with a live touch that no lover should miss.

The [DOMESTIC! Just Can't Help It.] tour that spanned across Japan during 2006 took the country by storm. With the landmark release of Ringo Shiina and company's second album "Adult" in January and the release of their "Adult Video" video collection solidifying the band's new, jazzier sound in the hearts, ears, and eyes of the world, the band set out on their "Domestic!" tour to give Japan just one more glimpse of the band. Their upcoming concert DVD "Just can't help it." is the fruit of this tour. This is the first retail concert video from the band to feature the new line up from the "Adult" album. True to its name, "Adult" features a smoother, more mature sound for the band compared to their previous album "Kyoiku." The new DVD, "Just can't help it.", gives fans that couldn't attend the concert their first glimpse of what Tokyo Jihen's maturing sound means for their live show. Recorded May 26, 2006 at Tokyo's NHK Hall, "Just can't help it" finds the new Tokyo Jihen focusing on the element of performance in their concerts. Sure, there's music. Sure, there are Ringo Shiina's trademark costume changes. But be prepared for a wave of surreal theater to permeate the performance as Ringo changes costumes instantaneously in front of you and flits around the hall. Snow blows across a seemingly all-encompassing projection screen when a nasal female voice breaks into the opening notes of "Yukiguni." Ringo Shiina appears clad in white kimono, bridal headdress, and oilpaper umbrella. As she completes the song, the curtain raises and the show begins. Classic Tokyo Jihen songs such as Dynamite, Genjitsu wo Warau and Service are played, as well as full blown renditions from their "Adult" album. Each song truly surpasses any studio production. In fact, such surprises as "Honnou" and even a song from Tomosaka Rie's solo career (composed by Ringo herself) is played - "Shoujo Robot". This is an amazing concert for anyone who craves less mainstream blandless, and more vivid pop, jazz and rock, that will leave you with shivers down your spine. |
