Fan (Shawn Yue) likes eating sugar canes and decides to sell the confection after dropping out of school. One day, Fan and his friend Ming (Wong Yiu-nan) encounter a girl (Charalene Choi) who takes part in a street lion dance, and both friends fall for her. Fan knows nothing about the mysterious girl except her advanced martial art skills, so they dub her "chivalrous lady" in private. Fan befriends said chivalrous lady and is soon inspired by her generosity, deciding to give her up for his friend Ming.
But when his love discovers what he has done, she begins to weep and Fan realizes he has ruined a potentially special relationship and discovers he no longer want to be alone. He remembers another mysterious girl he once met in a remote hillside village who he nicknamed "Snow White" (Gillian Chung) because she is always dressed in white. He bumps into her several times and discovers that Snow White is struggling with her life. And now Fan swears this time he will take the relationship seriously.

Professional Review of "Just One Look (VCD) (US Version)"

According to the promotional slogan, Just One Look is about first love. To a certain extent, it is correct, this film features a puppy love story among a group of teenagers. In a metaphorical sense, however, it is more like a love story between the director Riley Yip and Hong Kong cinema. What is significant about this film is its nostalgic setting. Riley Yip has successfully recreated the 1960-70s period of Hong Kong (Cheung Chau to be exact). The setting and the costume design of the characters are carefully arranged, that you can really feel the professionalism and the seriousness of the filmmakers' effort. Contrary to Joe Ma's Summer Breeze of Love in which the story is told in the girls' perspective, this film is focused around the two male characters, Shawn Yu and Wong Yau-Nam. Gillian and Charlene do not share too much screening time as compared to Summer Breeze of Love. If your only objective is to watch Twins, you'll probably feel disappointed. Having said that, it does not mean this film is not worth to watch. The story, presented from a male perspective, is actually quite interesting. I am not sure if director Riley Yip has incorporated any of his personal experience into the script or not, but what is certain is that the story shows his genuine love toward Hong Kong cinema. Through the main setting of the film, that is, the movie theater in Cheung Chau, Yip recalls the collective memory of the older generations about their time and reminds us how vigorous the film business was in the past. The comparison of the past and that of the lifeless and dying film industry in Hong Kong today is really sorrowful. Similar to Yip's previous film Metade Fumaca, metaphors are used brilliantly in this film. Yip makes us aware of the ambivalent relationship between the audience and Hong Kong cinema through a series of events and characters. For instance, the character of Eric Kot is a typical example of Hong Kong movie audience. He always tells his students that Hong Kong movies are crappy and prohibits them from watching, but he himself is always the first one to buy ticket and watch any newly released Hong Kong films, he even remembers the scenes of most of the films he has watched. No doubt this character has a very contradictory personality, but it is in fact a very genuine portrait of a typical Hong Kong movie audience. Another example is the character of Anthony Wong. His character is the representative of Hong Kong cinema. The way he is being attacked by Shawn Yu for ten years parallels to the fact that Hong Kong movies are being "attacked" by local movie critics and audience for a long time since the decadence of the Hong Kong film industry in the mid 1990s. It seems that Riley Yip wanted to pose a question for us - Do we actually hate Hong Kong cinema that much? If the film industry really dies, just like the death of Wong in the film, will we celebrate happily or feel bad as Shawn Yu does? Without doubt Just One Look is a carefully crafted work. The subject matter is handled sincerely by the director. However, it lacks entertaining value. As compared to the funny Metade Fumaca that is full of surprising twists, the story of this film is too dry and insipid. In short, it is a good personal statement, but not a qualified mainstream commercial film. by Kantorates - Cinespot.com |

Just One Look is one the best movie I've seen so far. It's very funny and it brings back many memories of the 70's. This movie has a taste of the European style but yet it shows how village boys are growing up in the country side of Hong Kong. The music choice is excellent. The actors and actresses in this movie are really portraying the characters well especially Anthony Wong who portrays a village gangster. This movie is not about Twins or Shawn Yue but about team works. It's not about your teenage idols. If you want a movie about your teenage idols, get some other movies. I've seen this movie over 10 times and still find it fresh and funny. This movie is genuine and made with heart. You will be surprised that Hong Kong can produce this kind of movie. I would put this movie in the same league as Cinema Paradiso and My Life as a Dog.

I only watched it because Twins were in it. Looks like a low budget movie made in a village in China and it wasn't very interesting. I didn't like the ending so I would give this movie a C.

waste of time and money
Just One Look is a waste of time and money. My reason for buying this is Twins. This is a bad reason to get this movie. Charlene is cute. Gillian is...... don't know what to say for her. The story is weird and does not make any sense of whatsoever.

This is definately worth seeing if you like to watch romance movies. It's sweet, emotional and meaningful. The shooting locations are also very beautiful and traditional, as it is set in the 1960-70s. The plot is quite engaging and there are some very sweet moments between Shawn Yue and Gillian Chung's characters, especially the letter and shower scenes. I can understand why some of the previous reviewers might have found this movie boring because it does not have any really hilarious jokes or action scenes, but then again....it is a romance. It's a must see for Twins, Shine and Shawn Yue fans too. Overall, great movie.

This movie provides a great combo of romance and comedy...although the plot doesn't really accomplish anything much, the movie is still enjoyable nonetheless! Definately a must watch....
