YesAsia Editorial Description

One of Anita Mui's most acclaimed performances is the title role in Kawashima Yoshiko, a sweeping 1990 biopic about the life and death of the Manchurian princess executed as a Japanese agent in 1948. Based on a book by acclaimed author Lilian Lee (Farewell my Concubine, Green Snake) and costarring the one and only Andy Lau, Kawashima Yoshiko carries a lot of cinematic clout, not the least of which is Mui's nuanced portrayal of one of the most complicated and controversial figures of modern Chinese history. Kawashima was reviled as a ruthless traitor for much of the twentieth century, but this thoughtful film demands a rethinking of the tragic circumstances that led the last Chinese princess - and her country - down the road to ruin.

Born less than five years before the fall of the Qing dynasty, Princess Dongzhen grows up in Japan, where she is indoctrinated into the emerging fascist regime. After being callously forced into a political marriage to a Mongolian prince, Dongzhen - now called Kawashima Yoshiko - swears to take vengeance on the world that discarded her. As an agent for the Japanese, Kawashima ruthlessly sets out to re-establish the Manchurian royal family, eventually becoming a general in the Imperial Japanese army. Unleashing a bloody reign of terror on her former countrymen, Kawashima succeeds in securing her place in history, but as the war draws towards its inevitable conclusion, the former princess finds herself trapped in a deadly web of her own devising.

Kawashima Yoshiko was originally the 14th daughter of Emperor Xu. She was sent to Japan to train in the ways of the Samurai but lost her virginity to Samurai. She then married a Mongolian prince and set her mind to fight for the independence of Mongolia but the marriage failed. Arriving Shanghai, she met an opera singer Wan Hoi. Because of her beauty and background, she achieved a great deal, including successfully smuggled a Queen, Yuen Yung and helped Pu Yi to establish Manchuria. Unexpectedly, she met up again with Wan Hoi, who was the number one singer at that time but also part of the rebel force, and tried to unsuccessfully assassinate Yu-Yeh resulting in his own death. Yoshiko saved him but he could not be bought, so she set him free without Japanese' permission. The Japanese were dissatisfied and eventually she was exiled back to Japan. She later returned to China. However, because of the lost of Japan, she got arrested and executed.

GREAT ACTING BY ANITA AND ANDY Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Great nuanced acting by Anita, Andy Lau, Derek Yee and Patrick Tze. Script is worthy of talents like Anita and Andy. I felt such an enormous sense of loss of Anita after watching this movie (after her demise), and also came to appreciate what a great actor Andy Lau is from this movie. MOvies like
Lee Rock I, II, Full Trottle, A Moment of Ramance, HOme in HOng Kong and As tears goes By tells me Andy is truly a great acting talent, almost in the same league as Chow Yan Fat, Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, the two Tony Leungs.
Run and get this movie - its worth every penny. Then get Mon Armor by Anita and Tony Leong Kar Fai. True classics and showcase of hong kong talent, which sadly i didnt realize till the demise of the Leslie and Anita. I pray that Andy and the Tony Leungs will still be around as there too little talents around nowadays.

Interesting Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Although this film was made in 1990, it is a pretty interesting film as it talked about the extraordinary life of Kawashima Yoshiko(a Manchurian princess who was sent to Japan when she was young and later helped the Japanese to establish the State of Manchukuo and betrayed China during the Second World War).
