YesAsia Editorial Description

Over the last two decades, Kitano Takeshi has emerged as one of the most representative figures of Japanese cinema, be it as an actor or as a director. His distinct style and aesthetic, characterized by unflinching violence, bizarre surrealism, and deadpan black humor, has brought him awards and acclaim the world over, but the maverick director cannot be so easily pinned down. Kitano threw something of a curveball in 1999 with Kikujiro, an off-beat road movie that pairs together two unlikely travel mates. Though Kitano is known overseas for his cool and inscrutable film personae, in his native Japan he is still best known as a comedic figure, after years of manzai comedy and hosting wacky television shows. All of his films have an underlying current of quirky humor, and this comic side of Kitano is most evident in the lighthearted, oddly endearing Kikujiro, which almost resembles a series of television sketches in framework. The film has a lighter core, and certainly less blood, than other Kitano films, but features many of the elements that set apart a Kitano Takeshi film including idiosyncratic characters, quirky moments, taciturn screenplay, and a Hisaishi Joe film score.

For summer vacation, ten-year-old Masao (Sekiguchi Yusuke) decides to embark on a trip to find his mother who abandoned him when he was an infant. After some haggling from his wife (Kishimoto Kayoko), layabout middle-aged neighbor Kikujiro (Kitano Takeshi) ends up chaperoning Masao on his journey. The irresponsible Kikujiro, however, promptly loses all their money, leaving the pair in a financial limbo. To continue on their trip and keep spirits high, the two resort to hitchhiking, swindling, and general tomfoolery, encountering a host of strange personalities and peculiar adventures along the way.

A Charming Masterpiece Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a lovely little film. It is at once simple and sophisticated, and proves that Takeshi is a master filmmaker, not just a master of cinematic violence. There is only very brief mild violence, and it is important in terms of defining the central character's moral position.

The transfer on this dvd is excellent, and the musical score for this film is Hisaishi at his best, reminding me very much of his work on Totoro.

worth buying Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie was excellent!! A beautiful view of the human spirt, it has its own language that will deeply touch your heart. Directed by Kitano, who is also in the lead role, the film explores the interaction between the two characters, Kikujiro and the young boy. I especially enjoyed the boy's "summer diary" entries, which were filmed as pages with live motion in them. There are several zany but deeply touching moments in which Kikujiro recognizes the boy's deep hurt, a result from his family situation, and attempts to assuage them with his rough-n-tumble humor. This is a definite must see. Having not seen any of Kitano's other films, I wholeheartedly recommend this one has a film that will stir your soul. GO WATCH IT!!

excellent movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
this is really an excellent movie. the plot is cute and kikujiro is hilarious through the movie. it is very well made and directied by kitano himself (being one of my favorite actors, i was pleased with this movie) it may seem childish that kitano is in a role helping a kid across the country to his mother, but kitano keeps that bad-ass image through-out. this is a must buy for japanese movie fans!
