Kim Dong Ryul Vol. 5 - Monologue

Kim Dong Ryul's latest album Monologue is currently generating heat amongst fans and critics who are taken aback by the singer's unexpected drastic transformation. Sounding completely different from his usual musical style, Monologue sees the artist delving more into mainstream sounds. Though still containing traces of his signature orchestral arrangement, Monologue reveals the artist's different appeals, offering more easy-listening tunes. Surprising not only his fans but also anyone who has come across his music in the past, Kim credits his recent exposure to a variety of music after working as a DJ and television host as the reason behind his change.

His new album sees a galore of musical artists - a proof of Kim's popularity and respected status in the business. Big Mama oozes in their soulful touches in Geugun Malya (Track 2) and Jung Soon Yong of pop band My Aunt Mary pairs up with Kim in the due Jump (Track 4). In addition, Alex of Clazziquai sprinkles springy energy into Eye-cheorum (Track 5), and world-renowned jazz pianist Uehara Hiromi, whom Kim befriended while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, offers a first-class performance in Nobody (Track 7).

김동률의 5집 음반 ‘Monologue’는 음반 제목에서 느낄 수 있듯 예상외로 매우 소박하다. 김동률은 이번 음반에서 음악적인 욕심을 채우기보다는 ‘좋은 대중가요’를 만들고 싶었다고 한다.
