Shock is the story of Koichi Domoto & his younger brother, Tsubasa Imai (the characters are actually called by these names), who are dancers in the same company, both of whom (from what I could tell) dream of fame, and "bringing a new era to the stage". But when Koichi convinces a reluctant Tsubasa to take a fateful motorcycle ride, tragedy strikes. What ensues is the company's journey toward their future on Broadway, "for Tsubasa's sake", drawn on by the phantom of his dead older brother, Koichi goes on toward Tsubasa's dream. I bought Shock, having absolutely NO idea what it was about, except that it was starring Koichi, and had Tsubasa Imai in it, and that it was supposedly good. While I had to watch it twice to figure out to the little details (my Japanese is pretty hodgepodge ^^*), I was not disappointed. The story behind it is really touching, with an excellent performance by Tsubasa (though he was only in it for about a fourth of the picture in all), who managed to really give it an emotional boost, and conveyed a whole lot of emotion in just one scene. Koichi? Well, Koichi is Koichi. (Always good ^^*). Anyhow, while some parts are corny and silly at best, it's very entertaining, and ends with an unexpected twist. (Unless you know perfect Japanese, and caught something I missed, which is entirely possible, I must admit.) Hearing Tackey & Tsubasa's "Ikanaide" in the show as a (very moving) solo, was a definate treat! Performers included (besides the stars), Ya-Ya-Yah (singing their "100% Yuuki" song), K. K. Kity, ABC, FiVe and others. Some of the effects were pretty cool, too. I do NOT know... how much of this would not have been in the cheaper edition (the cut edition), but I really enjoyed the uncut edition. Among the parts that were most likely cut out of the cheaper edition, (Im not sure what was, but as a guess) there was a part before the begining of the show where Koichi is talking to the audience, and quite a lot of extra songs at the end of the show that were probably cut. There was also a portion that was like "the making of Shock", including footage of what poor Koichi had to survive in order to do this show. (Makes you really feel sorry for him... ~.~) All in all, I loved this show. It is now my absolute favorite musical, and I just can't wait to watch it again (and again, and again...). |
