每年韩国电影振兴委员会(Korean Film Council)挑选三至六位当地名导，并为他们推出个人自传，成为《Korean Film Director Series》丛书系列的一部分。此为以英文编写的朴赞郁自传，全书共164页。
1963年出生于汉城的朴赞郁，毕业于西江大学哲学系。虽然主攻哲学，但朴赞郁对电影工作兴趣浓厚，在课外时间参加校内的电影研讨会，与其他志同道合的电影人学习电影理论及撰写影评，成立了『西江电影联合会』。及後透过研讨会的前辈介绍，到李长镐导演旗下的公司任副导，参与的电影包括郭在容导演在1990年拍摄的《A Sketch of a Rainy Day》。1992年他正式执导了处女作《The Moon Is ... The Sun's Dream》，1997年又拍摄第二部影片《The Threesome》，虽然两部影片的票房并不理想，却引来好些影评人的注目。其後，朴赞郁继续撰写剧本及制作电影，2000年终凭《JSA安全地带》一炮而红。之後，朴赞郁在康城影展以《原罪犯》一鸣惊人，即被冠以世界最危险导演之名，2002年《复仇》、《原罪犯》及2005年《亲切的金子》被誉为绑架、禁锢与赎罪的「复仇三部曲」。
