十九世紀末的四川，一心嚮往都市生活的鄉村姑娘鄭麼姑，經人說媒，嫁給成都近效天回鎮興順號雜貨舖的老闆蔡興順，她也當上老闆娘。蔡興順生性呆笨，上無爹娘，下無兄弟，但有個做袍哥舵把子大管事的大老表羅德生保護，倒也無人敢欺侮。婚後的鄭麼姑，人稱蔡大嫂，由於人長得漂亮，總有不少酒客紛至遠來，花言巧語諸多調戲，遇見羅德生總免不了挨頓臭罵。大老表還常為鎮上的人打官司，排憂解難，相處時間一長，兩人漸生愛意。一日，羅德生突然出了遠門，蔡大嫂悵然若失。過了幾年，羅德生帶了個流娼劉三金回來了。劉三金一心想棄娼從良，但羅德生卻讓她去勾引糧戶顧天成，在牌桌上擠乾了顧最後一兩銀子，劉三金決定離開天回鎮。臨走時，她拉了羅德生和蔡大嫂的皮條。兩人的感情尤如洪水開閘，一瀉千里。新年將至，羅午生帶蔡大嫂到成都看燈會。無意間碰上顧天成，仇人相見，分外眼紅，顧天成被打得落荒而逃。為報私仇，顧天成入了洋教。他知道八國聯軍打進北京城，只要有人舉告反洋教的人，就會被抓進天牢，他激動不已，深仇在恨有了清算的一天。顧天成領兵前來抓羅德生，羅德生聞訊逃得無影無蹤。官兵砸了興順號。蔡興順瑯鐺入獄，顧天成追蹤蔡大嫂回娘家，提出要娶蔡大嫂為妻……
