Professional Review of "Laputa: Castle in the Sky"

April 25, 2006

This professional review refers to Laputa: Castle in The Sky (Taiwan Version)
Hayao Miyazaki's follow up to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is a distinct change of pace. Perhaps as a reaction to Nausicaa's overly dense plot and general grimness, Miyazaki creates a film that lets its elements breathe.

Laputa can almost be viewed as the base clay of Miyazaki's career: it features a surprising number of themes and elements that recur throughout his work. The danger inherent in the abuse of technology is at the core of Nausicaa. There is a fantastic and idealised European setting (actually based on a Miyazaki trip to Wales) that also gets a workout in Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso. The hugely entertaining and bumbling sky pirates reappear in Porco Rosso. The sky pirates's leader, Ma Dolo, is another of Miyazaki's strong female protagonists, and a mysterious girl with a magical gem is a character at the center of Nadia - Secret of Blue Water, a Miyazaki-initiated project that ended up at Gainax.

Laputa is a pure delight and has plenty to offer viewers of any age. Pazu and Sheeta flee the different groups in one spectacular chase after another. When the pair finally reach the city in the sky, Miyazaki creates a serene environment that makes the viewer contemplate that, although the lives of the pioneers of potentially dangerous technology may be transient once the power is released, it cannot be taken back.

Laputa's influence is everywhere. Its spectacular ending seems to have imprinted itself on Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira, Metropolis, Steam Boy) and even Gonzo's recent (and fantastic) Last Exile owes plenty to this Miyazaki masterpiece.

I'm afraid that I don't get it... Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I know that many people love this film, so I'll apologise in advance for this negative review.

...

As someone who usually loves a Hayao Miyazaki movie it's quite frustrating that I can't even bring myself to even like Laputa. A lot of it just seems cobbled together: leftover airships that didn't make it into Nausicaa, Laputa the flying island from Gulliver's Travels, and a pair of protagonists who are essentially just copies of those from Miyazaki's earlier work 'Future Boy Conan'. Add to this mix some totally unsympathetic antagonists, that range from greedy and stupid at best to utterly psychopathic at worst, and a few scenes of sudden and surprising brutality and death and this is the resulting movie.

There may be a Miyazaki movie under there somewhere but I'm afraid that I can't find it - and not for lack of trying. Unfortunately I just end up liking this movie less an less every time I see it. Finally I couldn't really bring myself to watch it any more and found myself giving this movie away, which I guess means that I'll always have a Miyazaki collection that's incomplete by one movie.

Fantastic! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've watched this so many times that my sister is getting bored of it... It's about a girl with a stone on a necklace that contains powers that the good and evil side both wants. The little girl tries to protect it to prevent evil and only she knows how the stone really works. She eventually meets this very genki boy that helps her escape. Many things happen until they reach the "Castle in the sky"... I reaslly recommend this because it's quite interesting and has excitemnet in it...

masterpiece Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Laputa is a triumph of animation and the pinnacle of awesome storytelling. Integrating elements of fantasy, romance, adventure, and science fiction, Miyazaki has put together a legendary story of epic proportions that is already considered a classic (well, it has almost been 20 years since the movie's release). Laputa is a story about a boy with a dream of reaching the Castle in the Sky, and the girl who posesses the key to reaching Laputa. This movie is unique in the Ghibli collection as there is a well-identifiable "evil" antagonist: this character contrast results in a much greater sense of urgency and risk, unlike later movies such as Totoro or Spirited Away. The animation itself is top-notch, as every explosion, runaway rail-car, and dragonfly plane are drawn to perfection with vibrant colors and full action. With excellent voice acting and music score to accompany, Laputa provides the viewer with one of the most unforgettable animation experiences ever been created. For those who haven't seen it - get to it quick! And watch all the other Ghibli films while you're at it. For those who have already seen it, recommend it to all your friends! Laputa: Castle in the Sky is without question my favorite (and in my opinion, the best) of all the Ghibli films, and I'm sure you'll all love it as much as I did.
