Lee Seung Chul Vol. 9 - The Secret of Color 2

In the epilogue of his latest release Lee Seung Chul Vol. 9 - The Secret of Color 2, Lee Seung Chul stuns his fans by stating that this could be his last album ever. Lee Seung Chul Vol. 9 - The Secret of Color 2 is the second installment of his The Secret of Color series, which began with his fourth album. Whereas the first installment projected a New York style of music, The Secret of Color 2 contains LA sounds, covering a wide spectrum of genre from jazz, blues, and acappella to rock and hip-hop.

Lee Seung Chul's biggest obstacle during the making of his latest release was to overcome the stigma of mainstream failure. The singer blames the shortcoming of his critically acclaimed The Secret of Color on his obliviousness to mainstream trends, having been absorbed in his own world of creativity while cocooning in New York. Having learned a painful lesson, Lee kept up with homegrown trends this time, receiving six songs in Korea before flying off to Los Angeles where he collaborated with Jamie Jones of All 4 One and many other international talents in producing what could perhaps be the last album in his career. Voted by the majority of Lee's fan club to be its main track, "Love You" (Track 3) is written by Kang Ji Won and features spunky rock sounds and beautiful guitar accompaniment performed by Michael Landau, who previously worked with music giants like Toto, Michael Jackson, and Sting.

1994년 4집 앨범 < 색깔 속의 비밀 >의 후속편
이승철 9집 < the secret of color2 >

마지막 앨범이 될지도 모른다는 생각에 무척 신경을 쓰며 초조하게 작업을 시작한 이승철이 만족할만한 9집 앨범으로 돌아왔다. 국내에서는 다소 생소한 개념의 연속적인 타이틀일 수도 있는 이 앨범은 1편에서 보여준 뉴욕 스타일의 재즈, 블루스, 아카펠라, 락, 힙합 등의 다양한 음악 장르를 이번에는 LA스타일로 그 느낌을 바꿨다.

이승철은 이번 앨범을 준비하면서 가장 염두에 두었던것은 4집 앨범에서 느꼈던 대중적인 한계를 극복하는 것이었다. 모든 앨범이 80만장 이상의 판매고를 올렸으나 4집 앨범은 의외로 40만장에 그쳤다. 음악적으로는 최고의 평가를 받은 앨범이 대중적으로는 크게 호응을 받지 못했던 현실로 인해 음반 판매량이 저조했던 것이다. < 색깔 속의 비밀 >은 뉴욕으로 건너가 4개월 이상을 녹음하면서 앨범 제작 초기부터 마무리까지의 전 과정을 마쳤기 때문에 팬클럽 같은 중간 모니터링의 필터 역할이 없었기에 자신도 모르게 대중성을 간과한 채 음악적 욕심으로 자연스럽게 흘러갈 수 밖에 없었던 것이다. 이번 앨범 < the secret of color 2> 에서는 그때의 교훈을 삼아 미리 한국에서 6속을 받아 타이틀곡까지 정해 놓고 녹음을 시작하면서 All 4 One 을 만나 추가로 3곡을 받는 등의 예상치 못한 행운까지 겹쳐 대중적인 면에서도 손색이 없는 앨범이다.

타이틀곡 < 사랑한다 >는 8집 앨범의 3번째 타이틀곡 < 시계 >로 알려진 신예 작곡가 강지원의 곡으로 많은 경쟁을 물리치고 팬클럽 투표에서 선정되었다. 중독성이 강한 가사와 멜로디, 미국 음악의 본질인 강한 락 사운드의 음악으로 토토, 마이클 잭슨, 스팅 등 세계적인 아티스트의 앨범에 참여한 마이클 랜더우의 기타가 사운드의 화려함을 더해준다.
