I don't really remember the show 20 years ago. But I think they cut scenes of yang kang and nianci going back to the village with their parents ashes. I think they were accompanied by yang kang tao teacher.

There were also a scene where she saved him from his teacher...I didn't remember that until they did the flashback and showed it..

I did notice the audio, but didn't try the mandarin one so I didn't notice that it was too quiet. I just turned up the volume. There were areas where it was inconsistent but that's to be expected...

I'm sure everyone knows the story, and can find reviews on the web. So I'm just going to review the DVD quality.

The DVD contains 59 chapters and 1 "Making Of" feature. The video looks very good. The English sub-titles disappear too quickly in some instances, and is cut-off at the right side on occasion. The audio has some problems. The music is sufficiently loud. But the dialog is rather soft, especially the female characters. When the female characters speak, the volume seems to fade-out once in a while.

As for cut scenses; I don't think anything was cut, as the plot seems to move along and make sense. But I don't remember every scene from the original release 20 years ago. So someone else has to verify.

Overall, if you don't have the vcd version; this DVD set is worth purchasing and watching again.

There is a problem with Cantonese Audio. We have to increase the volume to make sure we dont miss anything.

The English sub title also has problem staying longer on the screen. Sometimes 1-2 sentence of sub title dissapear in 2 seconds. I dont know anyone can read that fast. Not like there is another dialog coming to rush the previous sub title to go away that fast.

They need to improve their Quality Control on this set. I am not sure if they even test it.

Picture quality is awesome but the lack of audio and subtitle made our experience less wonderfull. Altough, It still fun to watch this series again after 20 years.

the leading actor named "Wong, Yat-Wah" (chinese name) , his english name "felix Wong" starred as the good naive samaritian in this TVB series. This actor also who starred in other good interesting drama TV series called "THE SILVER TYCOON" released VCDs Boxset as a good guy role into a ambitious villain role. This is a refreshing storyline from his typical good samaritian guy roles in TVB to refreshing character roles in ATV drama TV Series. He also starred in other good ATV drama TV series such as "HEAVEN'S RETRIBUTION" & "ALL OUT OF LOVE" released in VCDs boxsets. For those interested viewers, you can search under "ATV TV Series" or search under the artist's name and then search under "ATV TV Series".
The main supporting actor named "Miu, Kiu Wai" who played the villain in this TVB Series also starred in other good ATV TV series called "Justice Pao Part II" which was MISSPELLED on this website as "Justic Pao Part II" which is also released on VCDs boxsets for purchase.

like "flunky" said, the audio is muffled at times. the audio either is too low or too high. though i've only seen about twenty chapters, the audio is a disappointment. if it weren't for the english subtitles, i would be lost at times. what a shame! for tvb put out a great series with such terrible audio, and it wasn't cheap either. the picture quality is good but like most fan, i want it all.

Just bought the DVD set but noticed there is a dramatic difference in audio quality between the Cantonese sound track and the Mandarin sound track. Has anyone noticed this also? The Cantonese audio track is slightly muffled and goes loud and soft throughout each episode (including the opening song!), while the Mandarin audio track is crisp and clear. Please let me know if you've noticed this issue. Perhaps I received a defective set??

This series itself is EXCELLENT. From a maximum score of 10, I give it a 15. That's how good it is.

However, I strongly advise against purchasing the VCD set. Buy the DVD version instead. It was recently released on July 2006.

Man scenes in the VCD has been severely out & the storyline does not flow. Picture quality is good though. I was so disappointed when I puchased the VCD set when it first came out.

I'm so happy TVB released the DVD version. I think TVB should just release DVD version of their series. All the VCD versions have been so badly cut.

I love this series the best! And am so glad to see it with English subtitles! It's still a great series. There are a lot of scenes that looks like it's digitally remastered, there are also scenes you can tell the age of the film. So there's a little inconsistency there. But it is still very watchable. Hoever, I still get the feeling that scenes are still getting cut out. I'm wondering if it is because the tape was not fully recovered or couldn't be remastered so they just left it out. I'm not sure.

Overall I love the DVD!

If you are a true HK drama series addict, then you would've watched 'Condor Heroes' countless times and then more. If you are a new fan, this one is truly an all-time favourite and frankly, one of TVB's best. Casting was perfect, even down to the minor characters. "Wong Yung" has marked her place in so many hearts til this day.

Of course, any classic is worth buying (in this case, you'd have to buy the whole series) but it is upsetting to hear that various scenes have been taken out from this collection. Why would they do that?

My review is simply to applaud this series - again.
