　　周朝開國君主文王姬昌的王位是蒙其伯父泰伯三次讓賢而得，泰伯讓王位出歧山，歷經艱辛來到刑蠻梅里（令江蘇無錫梅村），“斷髮紋身”獲得當地部族認同，帶領民眾群地開澤，變蠻荒為殷富，受到擁戴，建立了勾昊國。周文王深感泰伯道德致賢，按周禮象徵社稷的九鼎式樣鑄“德鼎”贈獻泰伯。

　　公元前585年，周朝簡王繼位。吳國十九代君王壽夢進京都朝覲，認祖歸宗。楚國大司馬子反，怕吳晉聯盟，獻計楚恭王請壽夢至楚，迫使吳國成為楚國的附庸，吳王壽夢斷然拒絕，子反後加害壽夢，未得逞。由此，吳、楚征戰不絕。
