胡智清是一家貿易公司的職員，處在新舊政權交替的非常時代。由於政局不穩，通貨膨脹，物價飛漲。並不富裕的胡家更是百上加斤。當胡智清好言規勸當年的同學、同鄉，現在的公司經理錢劍如不要投機買賣，反遭忌恨而被解僱。
回到家中，發現妻子與母親發生矛盾，而且在不斷激化。在走投無路之下，胡智清在車上拾得一個錢包。經過一番內心的掙扎，他將錢包歸還失主，不料被誣為小偷而挨打。羞憤之中，胡智清被車撞傷。
本片反映了四十年代末期，大陸政權易手前夕的動蕩不安，表現市民階層的不安、痛苦和傍徨心態。
