    April 18, 2007 Mixed Reaction .. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It is always a pleasure to hear a new track from this resilient artist. The highlights for this Best of .. album will have to be あの夏の日 and the 2007 versions of her older much-loved hits.

She sounded strained and has taken a different approach (phrasing-wise) to the retake of her older hits like 難破船. This breathy and disjointed style of singing was evident in "Chinatown" and one just wonders if this is her new 'style' of singing nowadays? I hope not.

Let's hope she will go back to her normal singing style for her upcoming "Enka" album. She needs it to tackle those songs.

  • February 18, 2007 Could be better ... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Although I am an ardent fan of Akina's music, this collection of songs from the past Uta-hime albums plus 3 new tracks is somehow disappointing.

The cover of いい日旅立ち is rather unadventurous. If I am not mistaken, it is just a straight take of the Momoe's classic without any uniqueness - vocally or in the instrumental arrangement.

チャイナタウン (Chinatown) is the best of the 3 new tracks.

Choice of songs for this album could be better. I would prefer to have "No More Encore" and 夜霧よ今夜もありがとうincluded. Songs from the Double Decade album are not present in this collection although there are some really good songs I would pick like "SAND BEIGE ~sabaku he~" and the sassy bossa nova remix of "Slow Motion"

Anyway, it is still a great collection from one of the best JPop singers around. Buy it.

January 27, 2007 Duets the in thing? Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
With the numerous artists coming together to do duets nowadays, here is another one tailored to make the most of the 2 contributing singers.

I wouldn't call this a top notch superb song. With the amount of songs from the Jpop scene nowadays, this single is something you would listen to, get a sight impression and then maybe forget. Personally, I prefer the c/w better.

Simply put it, good but could be better.

January 27, 2007 Cool cut match Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It is not surprising that Matchy has recuited the veteran tunesmith 筒美京平 to pen this mid-tempo ballad (don't miss the c/w 情熱ナミダ - which is subsequently penned by Kyohei himself).

Although I personally find this single tinged with the 'old-school' feel, it is afterall a rather enjoyable and catchy tune. Way to go!!

June 5, 2006 Could be better Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Since the 80's, I've always been Seiko's fan and the release of every new album is highly anticipated. But lately, she has kept to her comfort zone by collaborating with her favourite song writer Ryo Ogura on all of the tracks of this new album except the latest single (written by 上原純). This is getting old.

One has admit that the album sounds good but bland. Each song seem to flow onto another without one actually standing out from the rest. This has been going on for a few albums since she collaborated with Ryo. One is beginning to wonder if this album contain songs left over from the previous Seiko/Ryo collaborated albums.

Not even the previous album - Fairy penned by Yuji Toriyama seem to stand out much.

Seiko's album used to be really exciting with catchy tunes that made her stand out from the rest of the Jpop artists. Tracks that come to mind - 天使のウインク, Rock n' Rouge, ピンクのモーツァルト and who can forget Diamond Eyes.

For a change, maybe she could either embrace the more prolific song writers of today like Bounceback, 坂詰美紗子, HUB, BULGE and スキマスイッチ who penned successful hits for the likes of Hitomi Shimatani, BoA, Crystal Kay and Matsu Takako.

I would like to see her collaborate with the younger generation artist - maybe a duet with Ayaka Hirahara?

There is still much Seiko can offer. I think with "the right combination", there is still the chance to blitz the Oricon charts again.

September 19, 2005 Crossover Seiko Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I have always been a fan of Seiko's music and have to give her kudos for bridging over and singing in Mandarin. It is no big news since she has crossed over to sing in English before. There is no doubt that she still can belt out a tune superbly and breath new life into her 4 classic hits, but I would still prefer her to sing in her vernacular tongue. One wonders why she did not do a cover of her hit "Hitomi was Diamond" for this release.

September 11, 2005 Latino Aiko Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Koishitai Heart is an upbeat latino infused offering from Aiko. Not only has she has incorporate her big band arrangement from before, the distinctly latino flavour has given the song a kick. It is not surprising that such a gem comes from the hand of veteran song writer Kyohei Tsutsumi. Highly recommended!

September 11, 2005 Raggae Magic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Bird has defintely claimed the remake of Rimi Natsukawa Okinawan "Warabi Gami" as her own. Adding a touch of raggae magic has given this song a new sheen and a rather dancable feel. Her vocals complement the song perfectly.

September 5, 2005 Change of pace can be good ... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Hitomi has finally released a ballad single. There is no doubt that she is cut out to sing this kind of stuff, although I wouldn't consider this to be a top-notch choice for her. It has defintely brought about a change to the blend uptempo releases from her lately. Let's see what she comes up with next.

September 5, 2005 Commendable ballad Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
There are many j-pop ballads around that are lacking in good vocals or down right trite but "Arigatou" is different. Ai Kawashima not only put a commendable effort in singing the song, the song is beautifully written. This single comes with two other tracks, the second of which features some authentic firework sounds in the song itself and the third a rather catchy upbeat offering.

August 11, 2005 Sweet Offering Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Mienai Tsubasa" is a great summer-ish song by the SweetS. Unlike most girl groups, the vocals are quite good and their musical taste is reminiscent of Hitomi Shimatani. With song writers like Bounceback backing them, they are on the right track. The c/w song "Waiting for U" is not too bad either.

August 2, 2005 Vibrating harmonies Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The tight harmonic singing on Summer Smile is impeccable. Even with the stripped down instrumentation Rag Fair did a good job of this song. A fun and uptempo summer track. Their rendition of the Beach Boy's Good Vibrations is as good as the original.

If you like this single then check out their superb cover of Yamaguchi Momoe's Yokosuka Story. Highly recommended.

  • July 7, 2005 Dressing You Up Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
There is cause for celebration in this second installation of Momoe Tribute. First of all, there are some really good re-mix versions of Momoe's well known tunes. Check out revamped and re-harmonized "Yokosuka Story" (3) and the Samba infused "Manjushaka" (4). The other highlights include catchy remixes of "Be Silent" (7) and "Ai no Arashi" (10).

The disappointing aspects of this album are the lack of imagination in some of the remixes and the repeat of “Sayonara No Mokougawa”, “Pearl Color Ni Yurete” and the already much covered “Cosmos”. I am sure from Momoe’s discography of twenty over albums, there are other worthwhile songs to pick from.

I hope songs like “This is my Trial” and “I Came From Yokosuka” will get picked for the next tribute project. Can't wait!!

May 10, 2005 Way to go Hiromi !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This fabulous album showcases the mature yet sensuous side of Hiromi Iwasaki. After being in the business for 30 years, she really can breath new life into songs like Momoe's cosmos.

Hiromi's singing ability is top notch and her delivery of each song is impacable. Highlights are - track 1, 4 5 and 10.

If you like this album, then check out her earlier offering Dear Friends. It is just as good.

March 8, 2005 Saucy Playgirl Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This album ROCKS... especially tracks like "Control me, rescue me", "Love-formation" and "Step up". This album is filled with superb guitar riffs, drive and energy. I highly recommend this album. Believe me the album sounds as good as it looks.

Check out Ayumi Hamasaki's "My Story" if you enjoy Rina's Playgirl.
