After trying out commercial rock-pop in his previous album What's Going On, Eason Chan proves himself to be one of the most versatile artists in Hong Kong yet again. Released in time for his concert, Listen to Eason Chan is almost entirely comprised of fast songs from various genres, ranging from dance to electronica to rock. With only one slow ballad, this may be Eason's most alienating Cantonese album yet. Regardless of the album's quality, it's nice to see someone listening to music fans' complaints about the lack of fast energetic music in Cantopop. However, I suspect many Eason fans may find this album too much of a good thing. With no lyric booklet or album credits, various sources have suggested that Eason was completely in charge of the album, and he has certainly, as usual, assembled an impressive team to back him up. The biggest name of all is veteran songwriter Michael Lai who supplies the sole ballad on the album, "Crying in the Party" (Track 6), surely used as a way of promoting Lai's own recent concert. Eason admitted that he only included the ballad in the album because it was written by Lai. Lyricist Wyman Wong tries to fit the mismatched song into the album by making the lyrics involve the happenings in a party. The result is an affecting, but ultimately contrived ballad that works effectively as a breather between the energetic fast songs rather than an energy-killing party pooper. Eason has attempted to do the type of fast dance songs that Sammi Cheng and Leon Lai excelled in before, but never has he used it as an album motif. Thanks to producers Davy Chan and C.Y. Kong, the dance songs are more fun than bombastic. The party starts off with "Mario Party" (Track 1), an energetic Latin-style dance track that is not unlike something George Lam might have sang in his heyday. The energy is elevated even further with second track "Tropical Island Serenade" (Track 2) written by Single. Produced by Zhang Yadong, "Tropical" is a breezy disco-style dance track that has an addictive hook like a good dance song should. It balances Eason's adaptable vocals and the high-spirited arrangement without letting one overpower the other. Leaving fun behind and heading more into bombastic territory, "Concert Live Gig" (Track 4) takes Eason straight into the Cantopop "rave" genre that has already seen its heyday. The result is a high-powered audio workout that serves as an excellent theme song for his upcoming concert. But among the more serious dance tracks, "Waterloo Station" (Track 5) and "Chameleon" (Track 8) are the top picks, thanks to the superb arrangements by Steve Welton-Jaimes/Tony Swain and Carl Wong. Much like Yumiko Cheng's excellent Yumiko Space album from 2005, Listen to Eason Chan is an album much more focused on production over vocals, proven by the addition of the second remix album. The exception to the rule is fan favorite "Wheel of the Era" (Track 9) from Yumiko Space co-producer Eric Kwok. A dark ballad disguised as a piano-driven mid-beat track, the melody allows Eason to give his versatile vocals a workout, which probably explains why traditional Eason fans would love it. However, the arrangement feels forced and clashes with the grandiose melody. Like "Crying in the Party", "Wheel of the Era" seems to belong on a different album. I call Listen to Eason Chan Eason's most alienating Cantonese effort yet because it's essentially an album of side tracks. The most exciting part of past Eason albums have been these non-commercial alternative side tracks such as "My End of the World" (from God Bless My Lover) and "Aspirin" (from The Easy Ride). When amplified to the length of an entire album, these tracks may not be as exciting as they can be when placed around karaoke-friendly ballads. Nevertheless, Listen to Eason Chan gives a much-needed energy boost to 2007 Cantopop, which has once again been flooded by pop idol ballads. For an artist at the peak of his music career to make his fans adapt to his liking rather than the other way around, Eason Chan is not only one of the most talented artists in Cantopop - he's also one of the gutsiest. Thanks to his adventurous spirit, Listen to Eason Chan may be noise to some, but a feast for the ears for most. by Kevin Ma |

| I was surprisingly happy to listen to this full new album. Contrary to all of his previous albums where you can find 2 or 3 radio hits (pop songs), this one only include 1 song of this kind (6th track - Crying in the party). All other tracks have more rhythms but are all different and all worth to listen. We can discover a new facet of Eason (creative and renewing himself). My favorite tracks are 2, 5, 6. Then, I would add the 3, 4, 9 and 10. By after, the others tracks. To mention is that Eason has particpate in the production of 3 tracks (7, 10 and 11). This is one of his best album in my opinion. I'm pretty picky at the point that I didn't bought his previous album where in my opinion was not that great (only found 3 good tracks). So, I think you can trust me and buy the original version of this album. The only bad comment of this album would be the lack of any picture booklet. But you get a remix album bonus. |

once again eason has suprised me this time his cd aren't your typical canto pop related songs more than half of the songs in the cd are dance-related it gives an overall good flow...because sometimes too much music genre can clash and destroy the flow of the cd all of the tracks are pretty outstanding track 1 - gives a tropical latin party feeling..and it's suitable to the title 'mario party'...eason does sing about mario too (like mushrooms and rescuing princess)..i like this track a lot track 2 - another fast song..this one is more on the lounge dance music..a fixed repeated beat...eason plays with his vocals here too..some electronic sounding track 3 - this gives more of a techno clubbing feeling..it has more electronic music incorporated..but still w/a good beat...eason brings in a lower tone of voice in this song too..working with his vocals (because most of his songs were sung pretty high)..and it has a catchy chorus (with a repetition of the word 'flash') track 4 - fast upbeat song..i believe eason is using this for his concert theme song (since this song is called concert live gig)...eason sings pretty fast here too..fast verus + chorus..it has a catchy chorus too..so i'm sure it'll bring up the atmosphere when he sings this live track 6 - the only slow song in his cd..it's really song too..has a good piano intro with a bit of 'fantasy music' into it..the lyrics seemed to be pretty interesting..not sure the full meaning..but 'crying in the party' really gives a straight-forward point...and eason's vocals was again pretty high..showing his great abilities track 8 - love the intro..electronic music + beat...this song gives a bit a 'roman law + leslie cheung' feeling..very mysterious and 'yiu' feel...again high vocals there were 2 songs that was composed by eason (track 7 + 10)..i didn't find it too outstanding..but it's nice to see eason taking effort into making his own music the remix cd was really nice too it adds more of the clubbing feel to each song even crying in the party changes from a slow song to a slow song w/a techno beat overall i really enjoyed the cd..eason has suprised me again looking forward to see his concert..hope he'll be using most of the songs in this cd!! |

Nice one Eason!

10 brand new tracks that is nearly toally different from what we normally get from this Canto-Pop King... Eason has once again demostrated his volatility in this album, 9 out of 10 songs were dance music, which is pretty addictive, and a ballad - crying in the party. Overall this is fine work from Eason and it's nice to see him do different types of music. One thing that neer changes is the quality of his albums and the way he handles the songs. The title says it all - go listen to this album now. |
