The 1999 drama Lord of Imprisonment sees Cheng taking on the role of legendary constable Tong Ling. Wandering the land in search for his missing wife, Tong stumbles onto various mysterious cases that can only be solved with his quick sword and mind. Lord of Imprisonment is divided into four stories, with Tong encountering cases like a headless corpse that resembles his wife, the golden needle serial murders, and mysterious female bandit Golden Swallow.
