YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Iwai Shunji achieved massive commercial success with Love Letter, an achingly sentimental and poetic film about love both lost and found. TV drama queen Nakayama Miho stars as Watanabe Hiroko, a young woman who has not yet recovered from the loss of her fiance Fujii Itsuki two years earlier. While visiting Itsuki's mother, she discovers his old yearbook. She writes a short, simple letter to Itsuki and sends it to the demolished school's former address. She doesn't intend for the letter to reach anyone, and instead hopes that the act of writing it will help ease her own pain. But surprisingly, she gets a response! The recipient is another person named Fujii Itsuki, a female who actually went to the same school as Hiroko's fiance. The two women continue to correspond, and the memories they share with one another bring Hiroko ever closer to finding closure. But will she ever recover enough to meet this other Fujii Itsuki? Co-starring popular Japanese actor Toyokawa Etsushi, Love Letter is a heartfelt and utterly affecting motion picture that fully demonstrates Iwai Shunji's masterful ability to bring intimate human emotions to the screen. Set against the picturesque backdrop of rural Hokkaido, Love Letter is a stunningly beautiful and even magical motion picture.

The poetic Love Letter
Love Letter is probably the most poetic Japanese movie that I have ever seen. A few scenes have imprinted in my mind when I first watched the film 10 years ago. Coming out in 1986, Love Letter never grows outdated, and is probably still listed among the greatest films in Japanese cinema. Set in the snow-covered Hokkaido, it contains plenty of aesthetically framed scenes which forms part of the film's fascination.

Directed by Shunji Iwai, the film starts with Hiroko Watanabe, portrayed by the elegant and graceful Miho Nakayama, mourning for her fiance Itsuki Fujii who died in the snow two years ago. To relieve her grief, she sends a letter to Itsuki's former school, which doesn't exist anymore, but surprisingly gets a reply from a woman also named Itsuki Fujii. The two ladies continue to correspond, and Hiroko learns that the female Itsuki was her fiance's schoolmate when they were in high school in Hokkaido. What she doesn't know is that the female Itsuki looks exactly like herself.

Hiroko decides to visit Hokkaido, and when she encounters Itsuki on the street, the sequence carries a poetic grace that I can never forget. The two ladies, far apart, look at each other from a distance. The crowd between them disappears from screen, leaving only the two Miho Nakayama and snow in the frame. The silence magically provides a moment of peace, a moment that has some life-changing power. Then the crowd re-appears and they lose each other in their sights. But they have gained some understanding about life and love from this momentary eternity.

Probably that explains why Hiroko shouts to the snow, " Itsuki Fujii, how are you? I am fine!" She has learnt to elevate her mourning and her love for the deceased Itsuki Fujii and let go of her emotional burdens. Her utterance is charged with emotion, neither sorrow nor joy. But this unnamable emotion can cause the audience to shed some tears. Like a poem, Love Letter sublimates strong emotions and uses the simplest and most condensed form to convey the most complex feeling, leaving a memorable aftertaste.

ok I guess Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
It started off really confusing and dull, though the scenery is tranquil and beautiful. I thought I would have to watch it again to make more sense but as you watch on, it became quite clear. In fact, it wraps up nicely in the end but I think the film could have been presented a little more better.

Pilgrimage Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
In the beginning of 2007, I saw the movie and soon became "Love Letter" crazy. Last month I made a pilgrimage trip to the sacred place "Otaru" and made HP(ttp://loveletter.3iii3.com/E_index.html) in order to solve the mystery "Why do I want to see the movie so many times ?" and to clarify the motif and a psychological technique of the movie. I appreciate if you visit the HP and make comments.

Excellent Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I heard about this movie about 8 years ago but never got to see it. I just got the Korean version and was totally blown away by just about everything. The scenery and music are just beautiful as well as the story and of course Nakayama Miho. To those who would watch this I would suggest reading the synopsis first because it could be confusing due to Nakayama Miho playing dual roles. This movie really reminds me of those "season" miniseries put out by Yoon Sok Ho. Shunji Iwai really is masterful in the way he composes the scenes. I am planning to get April Story now. Thanks also to Yesasia for terrific service.

Honestly, I thought this was a really bad, boring movie. It didn't make sense, and acting was poor (maybe its because i dont like Nakayana Miho) but anyway... I didnt like it
