In Praise Of Love & Sex Among The Ruins
The title can be as misleading as it can be suggesting. There is much talk about love and sex in the modern society. The cast is a group of people searching for their own identity and thus are in search for love. I believe most of the cast gave a good performance. Else, no one can deny that Ada Choi steals much of the limelight of the show due to her portrayal of a lesbian charcter. The story is not a unique one neither is it an ordinary one, it is an original story which stands out by itself. I believe it's not meant to be an arts film but it is just a film wanting to convey a message. I'm guessing the message would be finding love in our now confused society is not an easy task and do you have the courage to walk out to experiment? It speaks on the relationship problems many of us face in real life and how we go about dealing with it. The story takes a step back to look at these problems and explores situations leading to or dealing with love and sex and yet does not focus on sex at all. The story revolves and develops around it. An incredible performance by Ada Choi for her lesbian character. A cool and feminine Billie (Ada Choi, left on cover) is in search of love, but not among men. In my opinion, the most memorable and beautiful scenes come out from Billie and Ah Mun(right on cover), the pair break up on Ah Mun's say so. A heartbroken Billie later watches as Ah-Mun leaves her. The music is very well done, fitting in with the overall atmosphere of the film. The film has a certain mood attached to it. It keeps to simple dialogue and the most simple acts are the most important acts as they define the character very strongly. For me, there is a simple yet important scene, which showed clearly the situation of the relationship the characters have developed into. The trio of Billie, Ah Mun and Mun's husband, Mun Chueng(bottom right) are actually seated in arrangement with the development of their relationship whenever they sit and talk. Wah(bottom left) is an important character and is there to tie the story together. Simple yet out of the ordinary. |

fabulous little film...
On the surface it's a film that seems to deal only with sex but the core of the film is emotional and the true journey is the search for love and for oneself. Dayo Wong and Cheung Tat Ming put it solid performances but the standout performance for me is the absolutely fabulous Ada Choi who plays an outwardly cool lesbian who is in reality deeply unhappy. |
