Has success gone to Antonio's head? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Love Soldier of Fortune", Alan Tam plays Antonio, a piano tuner with a noble spirit, but a very flaky personality. Maggie Cheung is So See-Dai, a popular radio talk show host. Antonio is See-Dai's biggest fan and has a huge crush on the radio star. They cross paths when See-Dai travels to the home of pop singer Lam Shu Fu (Michael Miu) to interview him and Antonio is there to tune Lam's piano. When Lam uses heavy-handed tactics to seduce See-Dai, Antonio intercedes to save the day. See-Dai decides to interview the quirky Antonio on her radio show and is charmed by his peculiar, passionate manner.

At the same time Antonio has moved into his family's ancestral home only to find that it is haunted by the ghost of his long-dead uncle Shan Liu (Stanley Fung, who also directed the film). After his intial fright, Antonio and the ghost seem to get along well. However, to feed his uncle's candle-eating habit (yes, you read that right), Antonio sells his uncle's songs to Lam Shu Fu; Antonio claims that the songs are his own. When See-Dai learns of this arrangement, she persuades Antonio to begin recording the songs himself. However, forced to crank out songs at a fast clip, the ghostly uncle begins to run dry as a songwriter and See-Dai dumps Antonio for churning out such soulless rubbish. Can Antonio win her back?

I found it a bit strange that See-Dai's feelings for Antonio depended not on his behavior toward her, but on her sense of the sincerity of his songs. The movie's resolution also seemed to go way over the top. Nonetheless, I enjoyed Maggie's performance and those of Stanley Fung, Sandra Ng, and Nat Chan (whose look here may have inspired Jim Carrey's look in "Dumb and Dumber"). By the way, don't be misled by this webpage; Carrie Ng does not appear in this movie.

It is rare to see this kind of romantic comdy in HK anymore. Alan and Maggie always have good on-screen chemistry. Alan also shows both of his comedy and dramatic acting skill in this movie. Yes! It is definitely one of HK romantic comdey classic.
