Finally, uncut! But is it worth it?... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Another of the infamous Cat.III flicks from Hong Kong, LOVE TO KILL is one of the absolute classics of the genre. The Cat.III psycho genre in Hong Kong has produced many hard to watch films but there are a special select few that are the absolute pinnacle of the genre. That list would include DR. LAMB, THE UNTOLD STORY, RED TO KILL, RUN AND KILL, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS and, yes, LOVE TO KILL.
This neglected gem revolves around the abusive relationship between a husband and wife (Anthony Wong and Elizabeth Lee respectively). Except, being Cat.III this is an EXTREMELY abusive relationship! Wong's abuse of his wife, whether it be beating her, forcing sex on her, raping her with a beer bottle whilst suffocating her with a plastic bag over her face and a gag in her mouth or generally verbally chastising her results in his actions coming to the attention a police detective (Danny Lee). The detective takes pity on the wife, allowing her and her son to stay with him at his home with him and his girlfriend (Julie Lee) which only serves to push her husband to breaking point, resulting in more violence, kidnapping and excessively gruelling rape (at one point in front of his own son!). The film's climax begins with wife, son and mother-in-law all prisoners of Wong in a secluded house, the police en-route and lots of ultra-violent and gore-drenched carnage!!!
This City Connection dvd release signifies the very first time EVER that the full uncut version of this classic has been available in any format. The two varying video versions that i have encountered over the years have both been cut (the edits made mostly to the rape scenes). Footage cut from one version would be present in the other and vice versa. But this version is the real deal as far as a complete uncensored version is concerned. There are a few problems that arise from this release though...
Firstly, while it is uncut, it would appear that this is almost a composite print as the quality of the picture suffers from jumpy edits where material has been reinstated. This causes glitches in picture and sound whenever the explicit stuff kicks in. The fact that this is a fullscreen presentation doesn't help matters either as far as overall viewing pleasure goes...
Secondly, unlike the rare video releases this has received in the East, this version lacks English subtitles for all us Westerners who have been waiting for so many years for the unexpugated version of this classic!
Ah, well...don't let these few gripes get you down. It's here! It's finally HERE! And it is worth paying the money for if you want to finally check it out in all its glory!
Because, let's face it...it will probably be another 10 years before we see this UNCUT version re-released on dvd in a definitive quality version with subtitles!!!
