I must admit that I haven't paid much attention to Vivian Hsu's singing career since her days with Black Biscuits. Indeed, as I spent time listening to "Love Vivian" in recent days, I also dug up my old Black Biscuits CD and gave it a listen, too. It is hard to believe that the Vivian Hsu of 1997's "Stamina" now has grown into the accomplished artist we now find on "Love Vivian".

In the Black Biscuits era, Vivian had some vocal strengths -- she was able to inject her singing with a strong sense of fun and some solid phrasing. However, she had some major problems with pitch control. It was not a big surprise when, following the release of "Stamina", Black Biscuits recruited a second girl singer to take over most of the lead vocals.

On "Love Vivian", Vivian continues to bring a wonderful sense of fun to her work and continues to feature solid phrasing. The natural feel for rhythm that she possesses enables her to make her uptempo dance tracks really come alive. Give a listen to the insanely catchy "So So" and you quickly realize that this girl's got game!

But the big surprise for me in this compilation is the major strides that Vivian has made in pitch control and sheer vocal quality. Vivian now is able to deliver ballads that are both thrilling and heartwrenching. Spend some time with "Good & Bad Tears" and be moved. Listen to "Love Smiling Eyes" and be amazed as Vivian reaches for -- and nails -- those highest of high notes. Snuggle up with "Think of You a Lot" and feel your heartstrings being tugged.

Do not be deterred by the just-can't-keep-her-clothes-on, slutty images of Vivian that some foolish designer decided to feature on the cover of this compilation. Those images do not reflect the quality of the musicianship we find on this album. "Love Vivian" is the wide-ranging work of a young woman who has grown into a mature artist and a solid entertainer. And, accompanied by a DVD of music videos and behind-the-scenes footage with a running length of 67 minutes, it is a very generous package. I highly recommend it for a general audience.
