Lam Yuk-tin is in love with Ching Yim-ha, but Ching has to marry Hung Yu-fu to pay off her debts. Lam ends up marrying his cousin Tai Yau-lan. Several years later, Lam, poverty-stricken, decides to leave for the city with his family in hopes of making a better living. Ching wishes to provide for his journey and asks Lam to visit her at home in the evening. When Hung finds Lam in his wife's boudoir, he kills Lam in a fit of fury and accuses him of theft. The case is brought to trial but ends up lingering unattended. Dai brings up her son Lam Po-kwan on her own, and Ching's only daughter Hung Chau-ha grows up in her uncle's home, to be away from her irascible father. She meets Po-kwan, who is working as a page boy at her uncle's college, and falls in love with him. Hung, who would rather die than seeing his family fortune fall into the hands of his rival's descendant, sets fire to his own house to kill his wife and daughter. Po-kwan saves Ching and Chau-ha, but Hung dies in the fire. Ching is more than happy to see her daughter marry her old flame's son.
