YesAsia Editorial Description

In Fritz Lang's startling and exquisite film M, fear stalks the streets of Berlin in the form of a serial child murderer whose grisly accomplishments are so heinous even the criminal minds of the underworld want him dead. Filmed in post-Weimar Germany during the infancy of the Nazi state, this tale of moral depravity serves not just as an allegory for the need of justice for all, but as an ominous foreshadowing of the sort of societal hysteria that leads to cultural witch hunts. Originally titled "Morder Unter Uns" ("Murderers Among Us"), M was one of Peter Lorre's (CASABLANCA) first major film roles. Fritz Lang's expressionistic eye plunges into the dark cityscape of Berlin, as he follows the killer whistling down the street, seducing small children with toys and candy, and eventually fleeing for his life. A city paralyzed by fear, and a vast criminal underground network of blind beggars, thieves and murderers, as well as an unforgettable climax notable for its startling statement about the murderous nature which resides within human beings, are all rendered in Lang’s painterly cinematography of sharp angles, dark corners and breakneck pacing.

"...What a haunting film it is..." - Roger, Ebert (Critic and screenwriter), Chicago Sun-Times, 08/03/1997

"...M is a dazzling film that, seven decades on, remains as innovative as it is unsettling..." - Kevin, Harley (Total Film Critic), Total Film, 11/01/2003

"...The genius of M is that despite the movie's expanded sensorial universe, it's what you don't see or hear that makes this Berlin crime thriller so terrifying..." - Premiere Staff (Premiere Staff), Premiere, 12/01/2003

"The film itself remains as potent as ever. What's really striking is the eerie pathos of Peter Lorre's performance." - Geoffrey, Macnab (Sight And Sound Critic), Sight and Sound, 12/01/2003

Great Drama, Mediocre DVD Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is one of the most original and unique Korean dramas ever made, and I enjoyed it ever since it first aired back in 1994. It is only ten episodes, unlike other series, and is well-paced, making it easier to watch.

The downside of the DVD is the quality, which is why I only rated this 4/5 stars. The back of the DVD says 'Please understand that the original "M" master tapes are over 10 years old. This may slightly impact the overall quality of some episodes." It seems as if they merely just transfered the contents of the master tapes to DVD, in other words, hardly any retouching done to make the few artifacts and graininess plaguing the video quality less apparent. Yes, I understand this is a pretty old drama, but at least the video quality (I give it 3/5 stars) isn't as disappointing as the audio.

If they couldn't do anything much about the video quality they could've tweaked the audio a bit in some scenes. Episode 3 sounds the worst of all because the spoken dialogue is slightly muffled and often hard to hear, but is tolerable at least. Overall it is mostly audible, but subtitles are useful if you don't understand a word of Korean. I give the audio 2/5 stars.

In case you're wondering if the Bitwin and YA editions are the same, they pretty much are identical in terms of video and audio quality, but the Bitwin edition seemed to have removed the opening titles and tweaked the audio in some places in contrary to the YA edition. They also removed the text (such as "Stay Tuned...") which you see in other series. The Bitwin edition, which has long since been out of print, included clips of Shim Eun-Ha early on in her career unlike the YA edition which merely includes the first episode of All About Eve and Damo.

Overall I give this DVD a 3/5. It would have been higher if they had tweaked the audio to make it sound much butter and did some retouching to the picture quality. Anyways, I am happy to have this series on DVD, but I would have gladly waited for something a bit better.

Don't listen to Mrs. Love, she rated pretty much all the shows she saw a bad rating. She shouldn't watch Korean movies/dramas if she's going to critize em all. People like her are annoying! If u don't like any of them, why keep watching???

Interesting premise. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Just by the sheer originality of the premise of this series makes it an excellent topic of discussion afterwords.

It is a great loss for Korean cinema that Shim Eun-ha has stopped making movies. Let's hope she reconsiders.
