Product Information

導演:羅維
Director: Lo Wei

Before director Lo Wei helped to discover Bruce Lee and the king of kung-fu comedy Jackie Chan, in Madam Slender Plum, Lo perpetuates the career of yet another Shaw's non-action, femme fatale starlet; the sleek and sexy, puppy-eyed Eurasian Jenny Hu. It's a murder-mystery in the vein of an old Alfred Hitchcock movie where Jenny plays the feigninly ignorant older sister to the coquettish Diana Chang where each have an affair with the same cheating man.

Gripping family drama Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Madam Slender Plum" is a wonderfully absorbing drama starring Diana Chang as the strong resourceful mother of spoiled teenager Jenny Hu.

Diana's weak-kneed husband steers the family finances into the ditch, then flees, leaving Diana to build a new life from scratch. She starts as a waitress in a cocktail bar, saves her money, then opens bars of her own. While she becomes a good provider to her demanding daughter, she spends too much time at her work and fails to spend time with Jenny, who becomes infatuated with an irresponsible playboy. Troubles ensue, leading to the unexpected conclusion of this gripping film.

Lo Wei's direction is skillful, the script is well-written, the songs are nice, and Jenny looks fabulous (as usual), but this film belongs to Diana Chang, who commands the screen like a Chinese Sophia Loren. (It's interesting to note that Diana is convincing as 19 year old Jenny's mother, although she was only ten years older than Jenny in real life.)

I only wish that we had more opportunities to see Diana play roles as strong as this one. "Madam Slender Plum" is very highly recommended by your humble servant.

Entertaining and absorbing drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Diana Chang Chung Wen's finest moments on screen as a self-sacrificing mother are here in this entertaining and absorbing drama. Jenny Hu is also good as her spoilt daughter who gradually turns good. This is an underrated movie that deserves to be seen. Give it a chance.....I am glad I did.

Interesting Twist In Solid Drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie is undoubtedly Diana Chang Chung Wen's career highlight being the most meaty role she played in the many years that she was with Shaw Brothers. She portrayed a caring self-sacrificing mother to perfection. If I have to criticise, it is that even in the most unpleasant of situations, not a hair is out of place and she is impeccably groomed. She is ably backed by Jenny Hu who plays her daughter.....not her sister as the notes above claims. the movie starts off with Jenny being really an obnoxious spoilt brat but before the movie ends, you are rooting for her as she changes into this lovely girl, the victim of bad judgement and bad company. The two songs lipsynched by Jenny Hu are bona fide Mandarin evergreens sung to perfection by Tsin Ting. There is an interesting twist at the end after the murder. It concludes an entertaining movie which comes highly recommended.
