YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Fruit Chan and produced by Andy Lau, Made in Hong Kong created quite a stir when it first hit the international film scene in 1997. Originally rejected from the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the film went on to acclaim at overseas festivals before returning triumphantly to its home country, where it went on to win a slew of local awards, including Best Picture and Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards, as well as Best Director prizes from both the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. Made in Hong Kong established director Fruit Chan as a representative Asian filmmaker, and star Sam Lee (who was discovered by Chan while skateboarding on the street) went on to become one of the most ubiquitous and fastest rising stars in the Hong Kong entertainment circle. Famously shot on leftover film stock, Made in Hong Kong channels the true spirit of independent film, utilizing real locations, unknown actors, and a creativity and resourcefulness not seen in Hong Kong Cinema in some time.

Autumn Moon (Sam Lee) is one step short of a triad, and an ocean removed from respectability. A go-nowhere, no-nothing nobody, Moon is the boss of his own gang, which has one member, a retarded fellow named Sylvester (Wembers Li), and passes his time playing basketball and collecting debts for local triad Wing. Marginalized by society and perhaps his own poor self-image, Moon nonetheless attempts to make his mark on the world, finding direction in his love for Ping (Neiky Yim), a young girl suffering from renal failure, and a chance connection to Susan (Amy Tam), a school girl who committed suicide. Moon's quest for personal significance is full of startling violence, lyrical emotion and surprising irony, and director Fruit Chan's camera is right there, infusing this street level Hong Kong tale with a vibrant and affecting immediacy. Made in Hong Kong succeeds on multiple levels - as a tale of disaffected youth, as a rude answer to the gangster-glorifying Young and Dangerous films, and as an affecting portrait of what it means to be born, bred, and buried in Hong Kong.

The story links up the tragic fate of four different people with the two blood-stained letters left by Ah Shan, a secondary school girl, who committed suicide jumping down from a building. Autumn Moon is a small fish working for the triads collecting debts. His father has abandoned his mother, setting up another family with a child. Autumn Moon's mother has a weak character but she finally manages to run way. Sylvester was a moron who sticks to Autumn Moon, living and working with him. The two befriend Ping during one of their operations. Ping has serious kidney disease and could die any moment. Sylvester picks up the two letters when he passes by the dead body of Ah Shan. One of the letters is for her physical education teacher, the other is for her family. The three friends try to deliver the letters. Meanwhile Autumn Moon and Ping are more and more mutually attracted, irrespective of the fact that this antagonises the triad boss, Fat Chan. In order to rescue Ping from her worsening disease with cash, Autumn Moon promises to kill Brother Wing. He fails the task because he is overwhelmed by fear. He is avenged by Fat Chan and is hospitalised after being seriously wounded. When he regains consciousness, he realises that Ping has died of her disease, lying on his unconscious body. Sylvester also met a horrible death, because he failed to deliver heroin for Brother Wing and was murdered. Overcome by anger and sorrow, Autumn Moon kills Brother Wing and commits suicide Ping's grave. When Ah Shan's family members receive her letter, it is accompanied by Ping's last words to Autumn Moon, and her declaration of love for him.

Made in Hong Kong Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
although i am not interested in gangster movies or whatever, but i heard good reviews about this film (and i love Sam Lee) so then i bought it, and when i finished it, i was like WOW! this movie is so real. even though i am not "made in hong kong" but i can feel that it is VERY hong kong. so tragic. so sad. so real. what is so real about this film is that since it is an independent film, the director used people who were unknown (even though i recognize 2 faces, Sam Lee, and that "Low-B" friend of his). it had a very good story line, but i dont get what the meaning of Sam's dreams.

There is a reason why this is called ''Made in Hon Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Firstly I would like to say that there were serveral reasons why I brought this movie:A:this film won best film of the year in 1997(I think) , B:Sam Lee was in it and C: my favorite actor/singer Andy Lau was the producer of this film. So before I watched this movie I haven't got the slightest of clue what this film was about, but when I watched it I understood why it won so many awards: everything about this film was very much associated with Hong Kong only(young peoples attitudes toward society, life in the triad society, second wives, life in council flats and the way the younger generation thinks and the way think speak. It is amazing how a low budget and uncommercial film(this was Sam Lee's first film and director Fruit Chan is well known for being the most uncommercial but one of the most talented directors in Hong Kong) like Made in Hong Kong could have won so many awards in Hong Kong and overseas(Korea, Spain, France and Taiwan).

Director Fruit Chan style Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Fruit Chan says "I make movie for poor." Made in Hong Kong, a realist movie that shows "the mess" and brings up the personality of teenages in Hong kong. Do not expect any pretty scene or fantasy dramatic screen.
THIS IS REALITY!! And the best part of the film is the name of this movie, "Made in Hong Kong." The place, people, style, cultrue, feeling, faith, sense, the instinct... very Hong Kong.
