YesAsia Editorial Description

From the vaults of the Shaw Brothers studio comes Marco Polo a rousing fictionalized account of the famous Italian explorer's adventures directed by the legendary Zhang Che (Chang Cheh)! Alternatively entitled The Four Assassins upon its eventual release in the United States, this 1975 martial arts extravaganza stars America actor Richard Harrison in the title role, some time after his character's famous meeting with the Mongolian emperor, Kublai Khan. Appointed governor of Yangchow and Imperial Inspector, Marco's first assignment is to eliminate all those who oppose the Mongol government. Soon enough, he gets wind of a plot to assassinate the emperor, dispatch a group of fearsome killers to deal with these rebels. However, these rebels aren't actually villains. In fact, they're really just four pals looking to avenge the untimely death of one of their closest friends. The assassins in question are played by Alexander Fu Sheng (The Chinatown Kid), Chik Kuan Kwan, Bruce Tong, and Philip Kwok Chun Fung (The Five Deadly Venoms), four heroes who must train diligently in order to take down Marco Polo's trio of deadly Mongol martial arts experts played by such Shaw stars as Gordon Liu Chia Hui (36th Chamber of Shaolin), Leung Kar Yan, and Johnny Wang Lung Wei (Clan of the White Lotus)! Will the four assassins prevail? Or will they be trampled by the march of history? Featuring Carter Wong and Si Si in wonderful supporting roles, Zhang Che's Marco Polo amounts to an entertaining historical epic, full of great performances and wonderful fight scenes, all handled in that grand Shaw Brothers style!

When Shaw Studio decided to produce an epic about the famous Italian explorer Marco Polo and his meeting with Mongolian emperor Kublai Khan, they turned to respected director Chang Cheh, who surrounded famed Caucasian actor Richard Harrison (as Marco Polo) with the best of the Shaw Brothers kung-fu film units had to offer – including future lead “Venom” Kuo Chue, “Master Killer” Gordon Liu Chia-hui, and “Thundering Mantis” Liang Chia-jen. The result is a splendid historical tale as well as a superlative martial arts thriller.

Realistic kungfu show Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Classical kungfu fans will enjoy the movie as renowned kungfu star like Fu Sheng participated in the main lead. The story is rather simple but the action is quite good.

Classic Fu Sheng film! but Marco Polo needs work! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Marco Polo was one of the many films which highlighted Fu Sheng's rising popularity, humor and martial art talents. It is also the first film to introduce Kuo Che,who later was known to many as the "Lizard" of the Five Venoms,as one of the main heroes in this film. This film features excellent martial arts scenes such as Kuo Che's leaping skills as well as enjoyable training scenes with entertaining "Masters" similar to the film "Shaolin Martial Arts" and "Shaolin Temple" As a bonus, there are some surprise guest appearances such as Gordon Liu,who plays a different role than his usual "Hero" character. Also, the biggest surprise was seeing Carter Wong, who usually stars in Golden Harvest Films,(The 18 Bronze Men)in a Shaw Brother Film. The storyline is average..but the weak point of the film is actor Richard Harrison, who plays Marco Polo. I can see why he defected to Hong Kong for acting roles, because he cannot act. Most of his scenes consist of staring or admiring at the chinese fighters or smiling at Shih Sze,wife of Carter's Wong's character. He was a tad better in "Boxer's Rebellion" but that's not saying much. Also, his character is not believable. His sudden change of heart for the Hans people was not credible after all he was the highest rank officer who was doing very well for Emperor Kalubakhan. Other than this minor point, the film is a great one for Alexander Fu Sheng as well as Kuo Che fans.
