The Marine Blues phenomenon started in 2001, and has only grown stronger ever since. A series of online gag comics, Marine Blues stars cute, super-deformed marine animals facing problems and absurd situations familiar to Korea's contemporary youth. The main character, Sea Urchin Boy, experiences funny and frequently revealing emotions as he navigates his everyday life, filled with insensitive friends, pet issues, money problems, and even heartbreaking romantic mishaps. The Marine Blues web comic now totals over 600 installments, with some episodes translated into Chinese, Japanese, and English. The series has since expanded into flash animations, publishing, gaming, and merchandising.
