Another fine film from director Song Hae Sung Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
On the Christian calendar, Maundy Thursday is the day of the Last Supper, the day before Jesus was to die on the cross. The word "maundy" is derived from the Latin word for "mandate"; after he washed his disciples' feet as an example of how they were to serve each other, Jesus gave them a new mandate: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." (John 13:34) What this love means in practical terms forms the theme of the splendid film "Maundy Thursday".

Lee Na Young stars as Yu Jung, a beautiful part-time professor who is at war with the world and, lost in her unhappiness, repeatedly seeks to commit suicide. Her aunt, Sister Monica, a Roman Catholic nun who shares God's love with prisoners, believes Yu Jung should meet Yun Su (Kang Dong Won), a prisoner facing a death sentence who also has set himself against the world. When these two strangers meet, they feel nothing but disgust for each other. But Sister Monica persists and gradually these two wounded, disaffected people begin to open up to each other. The natural way this occurs, the bond that grows between them, and the secrets we learn about them are deeply moving.

Director Song Hae Sung, who also directed the superb "Failan", scores again with "Maundy Thursday". Seamlessly and strikingly lensed, the movie manages to be deep without being pretentious or high-faluting. Both Lee Na Young and Kang Dong Won deliver vivid, believable performances. You won't find many films better than "Maundy Thursday" at depicting forgiveness, love, and redemption. I recommend it very, very highly.

excellent...10/10 Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a wonderful but very sad movie. I dont recommend this movie for those with a weak mindset, but if you do have the patience to enjoy the chemistry it is a must see! Kang Dong won and lee na young portray the perfect couple who were not meant to be, but their love is everlasting. although i wish for a better ending, it is no doubt a good movie. so 10/10

Prisons within the soul Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Watched this about 2 months ago and wrote the below then - but didn't post it.

This is certainly a very emotionally charged film. Watching these two people's terrible pasts unfold in flash back about reasons why one killed and another numerously attempts suicide is so well written and performed that you cannot forget about this easily after the movie concludes. In the first instance, the two characters will seem egotistical and self important by their trapped and monochromatic emotions. But as a viewer we are duly free, watching tortured and bound souls, no doubt lost in their own personal tragedies. Only after two thirds through the film, when both of these characters gradually open up to each other at Dong-won's prison visits, do their tumultuous pasts unravel and their tragic lives become revealed. There is a past, a reason of why and how these two people's messed up lives happened. Cannot give spoilers here and ruin a great film, but I can say that the nature of forgiveness towards redemption in this film (the most difficult thing with these circumstances, certainly in the case of a murderer) is its strong essential key - forgive and be forgiven = redemption in the soul. Its a simple but universal power of truthful release in a bound human heart that wins out for that person, if only a truthful heart is released from the 'prison' inside that person's life. Whatever that 'prison' may be.

Between these two character's communiques (Na Young's prison visiting Maundy Thursday) is how they discover and release in each other their tragic and cruel circumstances that life threw at them. The scenes of remorse of Dong-won's character of the girl he had killed as he is faced with her mother at one point and of Na Young's hateful rejection of her mother, blaming her for the incident that had happened to her as a teenager, are high emotional scenes of gritty drama. Albeit, MT is a sober and sensitive portrait of "death row" and/or suicide situations and parallel to certain people's lives.

Dong-won Kang and Na Young Lee play two challenging and excellent parts which could be, for the moment, one of their pinnacle roles. They have both a good solid back catalog with "Romance of Their Own" and "Someone Special" respectively, but those films don't exactly have the sort of pathos this film describes. Credit also to the director Hae Sung Song and the screen writers of this film, Min-seok Jang and Eun Young Park, as it will be interesting to see more films by these combined talents. This is an essential South Korean drama movie that should get a more world wide audience. Don't miss this one, but be prepared for a hard viewing.

another sad movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The movie is better than average in my opinion. At times, the movie was slow, but still interesting. I could have turned it off, but it makes you want to finish it and find out the ending. I wish the ending where he made his speech would be more meaningful and sympathetic. I think it would have done better to pull the audience heart with sadness than just a simple speech.

i have never really seen any of lee naeyoung's movies and ive only seen two of kang dongwon but their acting in this movie blew me away. in my opinion the characters in this movie were extremely complex and had it been played by a didfernt actor it mgiht not have been as good. even though the movie itself was sad. it had something about it tat made you wanna watch it over and over again.

i personally cried buckets in this movie. more than all teh stiarway to heaven episodes combined or the movie a moment to remmeber which until now i thought to be my favorite movie.
