Celebrated playwright Raymond To Kwok Wai (The Mad Phoenix) directs May & August, a powerful dramatization of the Rape of Nanjing in 1937. Told through the eyes of two young children named May and August, the film relates their growth and burgeoning independence, as their innocence is suddenly ripped from them. The Japanese soldiers kill the children's father during the attack, and though their mother (Cecilia Yip) tries to protect them, she eventually succumbs. Their uncle cares for them for a time, but the Japanese make an example of him too. Ultimately, it's just May and August who must brave the world alone, and their increasing strength in the face of hopelessness makes for powerful, touching drama. Director Raymond To pulls no punches with May & August, and combines history and character with affecting, harrowing poignancy. For her remarkable work as the children's strong mother, Cecilia Yip was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress award at the 22nd Annual Hong Kong Film Awards.

　　In December of 1937, the two young girls, May and August, lived blissfully with her parents in Nanjing. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the war totally changed their lives. May's parents were killed by the Japanese soldiers. Once May's uncle knew the tragedy, he brought the two girls from Refugee camp. Later, the Japanese invaders took full control of the city and May's uncle was arrested and executed. Since then, May and August must learn to be strong to face all the upcoming challenges.
