A thrilling "who-dun-it?" that weaves in and out of the lives of the residents of a small village. Sex and subterfuge bubble to the surface when the young coquettish Mrs Wang (Elaine Chin Yen-ling) disappears. A young girl, Marble (Hsu Ke-ying) says she saw someone falling in the water after a violent quarrel. When the police find no evidence, Marble and her friends launch their own investigation. But Marble is going to get more than she bargained for now that the killer knows there is a witness out there.

Oddly constructed but interesting movie

The first half of "Maybe It's Love" introduces us to a diverse group of people and a diverse set of storylines, storylines that seem to have nothing to do with each other except that they all take place within the same Hong Kong village. One wonders how these different threads will ever be drawn together into a coherent whole. Indeed, the first half of the movie veers weirdly between humor, violence, sex, and scenes with cute kids. The threads ultimately are knit together through one of those cute kids, a little girl called Marble, who likes to spy on her neighbors and believes she has witnessed a murder, but is unsure of just who was killed. Cherie Chung and Elaine Chin provide plenty of sizzle to go along with the cute kids. This is a very strangely conceived story, but it all comes together smartly in the end. Worth watching. |
