June 23, 2006 Patience yields great rewardsI found the U.S. version of this film in a rental shop (oddly retitled PULSE for American release). The clerk who often waits on me is an intelligent man and a perceptive critic of films, but he had tried three times to watch Kairo and had never made it to the finish. I discovered the reason for this phenomenon, which also affected me at first. I rarely award five stars to anything--I would not even give Citizen Kane more than four and a half--but Kairo is simply a great film, one which must be taken seriously as art, not merely as entertainment. Once the viewer puts aside any notion that the film is mere popcorn and gives his whole mind and heart to the experience, he will encounter subtleties and beauties rarely seen in this genre, at any time since and including the 1930's (a golden age of horror films in English).
Give this film a chance. Rent it first if necessary, but be patient. I find the film not only fascinating but profoundly moving, and the mysterious process affecting souls and bodies which is the central premise of the film (no spoilers here) says so much about the spirit of our age.Did you find this review helpful?
