Hong Kong producer Johnny Mak and scriptwriter Stephen Shiu manage to spin an affecting yarn out of a popular radio program! Directed by Johnny's younger brother Michael Mak (Everlasting Love) and David Lai (Spiritual Love), the 1988 film Midnight Whisper saw the producer who was best known for gritty criminal dramas like Long Arm of the Law try his hand in melodrama territory. It proved to be an interesting experiment, and with acclaimed actress Josephine Koo (Homecoming) and action starlet Moon Lee (Angel) playing the leads as a mother and her daughter, the result was an unexpectedly powerful and emotional film with social relevance. Also, fans of eighties Hong Kong cinema and music should watch out for the appearance of singer/actress Prudence Liew, who had a small role here.
Real life radio personality Bak Wan Kum plays herself as the host of a popular late-night radio call-in program. One day she gets a call from a hapless woman (Josephine Koo), who has had more than her fair share of personal tragedies. After being abused by her husband for years, she finally had enough and filed for divorce. But her mother-in-law sneaked her baby away to Mainland China during the turbulent years of the Cultural Revolution. In order to earn the money necessary to get her teenage daughter (Moon Lee) safely back to Hong Kong, she had to accept to become the mistress of a gang boss... Sensing that the desperate woman shows suicidal tendencies, Bak exerts her influence over the airwaves and calls on the wayward daughter to come back to her mother's side...before it's too late!
