Amusing film of culture clash
Amusing film of culture clash

Director Mitani Koki's "Our House" is a big change from his more famous films, "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald" and "The Uchuoten Hotel". The more famous films are wild screwball comedies in which the cast spends most of the film scrambling to avert disaster. "Our House" is a quieter, more subtle form of comedy, a comedy of manners. Husband and wife Iijima Naosuke (Tanaka Naoki) and Iijima Tamiko (Yagi Akiko) are ready to have their own house built. Tamiko knows a successful interior designer named Yanagisawa (Karasawa Toshiaki), an old college friend, who she believes would be perfect as the architect for their home, although he never before has performed such a job and is unlicensed for the task. Tamiko's father Iwata (Tanaka Kunie), an old semi-retired carpenter and construction contractor, is brought on board to arrange the proper licensing and build the house. Putting the hip, Westernized Yanagisawa together with the old, intransigent Iwata proves to be a volatile mixture played to great comic effect, as they battle over even the most simple things, like whether the front door should open in or out. Adding to the amusement is the construction crew Iwata hires for the project, most of whom appear to be refugees from retirement homes. The simple story proves to be an excellent vehicle for illuminating a variety of Japanese traditions and for showing how they clash with the more business-like approach of a younger generation. As you might expect in a light-hearted film of this nature, the culture clashes ultimately lead to growth, mutual appreciation, some touching moments, a beautiful new home, and lots of laughs along the way. Your humble reviewer recommends "Our House" unreservedly. |

Funny and Well Done

By the same director who did "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald". Again, a wonderful ensemble of actors, especially the father and his crew. A very enjoyable film of gently poking at the Americanization of the building/architecture and nostalgic look at the traditional Japanese craftmanship (which we all know is superb!). How great it would be to reach and adapt a nice balance like everything else. A really fun movie to watch. The director has a very unique vision and style. |

Japanese do it better... comedies, I mean. But this is not new to any cinema lover. In particular, this movie is one of the finest examples. It will make you laugh as hell but at the same time, will bring you to know in depth the personality of each character. The intelligent, ironic metaphors are simply amazing, and the actors' great job makes this movie one of my favorites |
