Since her touching performance of "Winter Child" in the hit drama Dream High, Suzy has been known for her warm vocals which are rarely shown in miss A's songs. Last year, the singer-actress deviated from her group's chic style and ventured into jazz through the successful duet Dream with EXO's Baek Hyun. Making her solo debut, Suzy strays away from the mainstream even further with her first mini-album Yes? No?, an atmospheric release delving into the inner world of a young woman struggling with love.
The title track Yes No Maybe (Track 2) is the only dance number in this ballad-driven album, but it still goes well with the album's hazy theme. The upbeat Britpop song is full of strong trip-hop beats and a tense rhythm to convey the pain and inner conflicts of a woman in love. Featuring scenes with saturated colors and cinematography reminiscent of Hong Kong arthouse helmer Wong Kar Wai, the song's dream-like music video takes a unique retro concept to pay tribute to 90s Hong Kong cinema.
Starting with the key line "I pretend to be happy again / Pretend to be happier" along with heartbeat-like sounds, "Pretend" (Track 1) is a sad monologue of a girl who forces herself to look happy despite her worries, loneliness and unhappiness. Heavy filter effects are used to highlight the dreaminess of the urban R&B ballad. Despite the melancholic lyrics, the singer soothes sorrowful hearts with her healing vocals. The depressive mood of "Pretend" continues in "Les Préférences" (Track 4), an electro urban R&B ballad about a girl's passion for her love. From the song title to the music arrangement to the lyrics, "Les Préférences" is a highly artistic number evoking the atmosphere of French romances. Suzy's heartrending lyrics beautifully harmonize with the expressive synth melody and soulful guitar accompaniment.
Despite the mainstream pop trend, Suzy presents an atypical solo debut with a special vibe of tranquility. Featuring smooth R&B, bossa nova and lounge music, Yes? No? is a tailor-made art piece for the singer to fully showcase her angelic vocals and wide vocal range.
