YesAsia Editorial Description

Returning with his first full-length film since 2005's Seven Swords, Hong Kong Cinema master Tsui Hark writes, produces, and directs the genre-arching supernatural drama Missing. Popular actress Angelica Lee (The Eye) sees ghosts again in this eerie effort which offers its share of scares, but is by no means a horror film in the traditional sense. Co-starring up-and-coming actress Isabella Leong (Isabella), Guo Xiaodong from An Empress and the Warriors, and arthouse favorite Chang Chen (Red Cliff), Missing combines supernatural, psychodrama, and romance elements in a less than predictable manner to tell an uncommon story of life, love, and death. The film also features beautiful underwater photography, and supporting performances from Tony Leung Ka Fai and Taiwan rock singer A-yue Chang.

A scuba diving trip turns into a nightmare when psychiatrist Gao Jing (Angelica Lee) and her boyfriend Guo Dong (Guo Xiaodong) meet tragedy at sea. Suffering from memory loss after the incident, Gao Jing can't remember what exactly happened in the ocean that day, and all that is recovered of Guo Dong is a headless corpse. Upset that Gao Jing is going ahead with the funeral, Guo Dong's sister Xiao Kai (Isabella Leong) angrily sets out to find her brother's head. Gao Jing looks for closure through therapy but only ends up with more questions and heartache. When her patient Simon (Chang Chen) claims that he can see Guo Dong's ghost, Gao Jing seeks his guidance to open her eyes and mind to the other side. Soon she's seeing visitors of all sorts, but no Guo Dong. At this time, a strangely eerie Xiao Kai suddenly returns to Hong Kong with her brother's head. But is it really Guo Dong's head that Xiao Kai has brought back?

Missing is a romantic mystery revolving around a team of divers exploring real life Asian Atlantis, Yonaguni, a sunken city lying between Taiwan and Japan discovered in 1986.

Guo Dong is an archaeologist who is mesmerized by the beauty and legend of Yonaguni. He vowed that when he found his future partner, he would bring her to this island and propose to her using an engagement ring which he hid earlier. Through his sister, Siu Kai (Isabella Leong), he got to know psychiatrist, Go Jing (Angelica Lee) and they fall in love. Acting according to his plan, he brought Go Jing to Yonaguni and together they dived into the sea to search for the engagement ring. However, tragedy struck and Guo Dong disappeared underwater. The search workers found a headless body but DNA testing were unable to confirm whether the body was Guo Dong.

Go Jing who was unable to accept this sudden change of events and the disappearance of Guo Dong slipped into a daze. In order to investigate deeper as to what happened underwater, she engaged the help of one of her patients, Simon (Chang Chen). Through his help, she saw things which she were not suppose to know --- and strange events started occurring to her, she start to feel things that other people could not. Were these strange events real or just hallucinations, a frightened Go Jing was not sure either. Hence, Go Jing went to get psychiatric help from Edward (Tony Leung Ka Fai). Just when things seem to get better, Go Jing received news that Guo Dong's head was found.

The head was actually found by Siu Kai, who dived into the sea once again. In addition, she also found a video tape which showed that Go Jing had a part to play in the disappearance of her brother. This cause Siu Kai to face immense stress and pain. The re-appearance of Guo Dong's head cause Go Jing to want to find out deeper as to what happen that fateful day. As if led by an unseen force, she went back to Yonaguni in search of the truth.

Well contrary to the first reviewee, i love seven swords, but film is not like a Tsui Hark for me. It jumped me, yes but the storyline is the usual chinese which i have seen thousand of times. But what the heck, its still Tsui Hark so go buy your copy.

Tsui fumbles again Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Following the excruciatingly awful "Seven Swords", "Missing" can be said to be an improvement for formerly reliable director Tsui Hark, but that is damning with very faint praise. The first 45 minutes of this film simply are tedious. After that, "Missing" becomes more interesting, but much too manipulative to be taken seriously. Blame Tsui Hark the scriptwriter for sabotaging the striking images served up by Tsui Hark the director. Recommended only for those who can't resist Lee Sinje's doe-eyed charms.
