Shibasaki Kou's "Mitsu": Sweet like Honey Having proved herself a potential actress in TV series such as "Good Luck!", "Dr. Kotohs Clinic", "Millions of Stars From the Sky" and "California within a Dream" and movies like "Tokyo Raiders" and "Kakashi", Shibasaki Kou has made her next big move by releasing her debut album "Mitsu" in early 2004. This Japanese actress now singer who made her singing debut in 2002 shows off her singing talent on "Water Drops from Moon" (Track 12), that she first released in 2003 as 'Rui'. It is the theme song of the movie "Yomigaeri / Resurrection" and catapulted her to fame after it came out on the market. With conventional percussion imitating sounds of water drops in the background, the vocal of Shibasaki Kou stands out to be especially soft and exquisite with the company of violins and piano. While Shibasaki Kou praises the glory of love on "Fantasista", she also has a plaintive mood on "Floating Clouds" (Track 2). These two sentimental tracks plus "Pyroxene" (Track 3) are so promising that they have helped Shibasaki Kou establish her very own style as a singer. It is surprisingly welcome that step-by-step improvement in terms of her vocal skill can already be found on this first album. This album also features "Can't Stand Life Holding on to Memories Only" (Track 6), the interlude of the TV series "Clinic on an Offshore Island" starred by Shibasaki Kou herself. While the pleasing melodies come from the talented singer/songwriter Nakajima Miyuki, Shibasaki Kou can really bring the sorrow and pain of her fictional persona into the track. Having chosen the right gamut for herself on "Forget-Me-Not", Shibasaki Kou gives a great performance with self-confidence. Others like "Winter Sky" (Track 11), "Forget" (Track 9) and "Deeply in Love" (Track 7) are songs full of tender emotions and they should top your list if you are especially into this kind of soft melodies. Tracks Recommended: "Water Drops from Moon", "Fantasista", "Can't Stand Life Holding on to Memories Only" and "Forget-Me-Not" Reviewed by Yes Lau (Hong Kong) Translated by Holly (Hong Kong) |

"Mitsu" has a fresh, contemporary sound, with interesting and thoughtful arrangements that never fail to surprise. The well-constructed songs are in a varied mix of styles, ranging from house to rock to latin to orchestral ballads. It all comes together through the appealingly waif-like vocals of Shibasaki Kou. Highly recommended!

This is a wonderful cd. The standout tracks are one, two, five, six and eight. While the CD is overall very quiet, Kou Shibasaki has an amazing sounding voice, and the songs are beautiful. Really a great CD release, and it's good to try.

I really like this. It's rather slow, but her voice has enough expression and range to keep it from being boring. I would still consider this pop and not easy listening or R&B. I really love track #4. In fact, the only track I dislike (I ALWAYS skip it) is the very first...track #1! Usually artists put their best songs first, but I think she made a bad guess on that one. It almost totally turned me off the CD...until I skipped it and heard the other wonderful songs that came after it. I wish she'd put track #1 last. It's really NOT a good song and should not be the one chosen to set the tone of the CD. Another track that is nice, but doesn't really fit the overall tone of the CD is track #5 with it's musica latina flare. It REALLY stands out from the rest which makes for a bit of a flow disturbance. Track #7 takes the singer to the lowest end of her register (alto) and she is very weak at that end...she should really stick to the soprano range that she sings so strongly and amazingly. She shows that soaring talent again on track #8. WOW. It's a powerful and expressive song. Very lovely. So, despite the few not-so-good tracks, this is a worthy CD that I think most people would like...young or old, it's very appealing to just about anyone. And it has 12 full-length songs, so you definitely get your money's worth with this purchase! I feel like even though I have to skip two songs (track #1 and track #5), it's still a fabulous CD that I totally enjoy. Besides...even with 10 songs, that's more than enough for the price! Buy it. And I hope she releases something new soon, because I will buy more right away.

It is a good cd it is a bit slow when you first hear it. But after the first couple of times you start to like it . It is soft and it can make you feel relaxed at times. I would reccomend it . Plus the booklet has a bunch of pictures in it .
