From the point-of-view of the children, "Mother" tells the story of the most unappreciated, loving and giving mother, who would sacrifice her own life, and sometimes the life of others, for her loved ones. In the autumn of 1955, a family of five children is living in the Tohoku area. In order to take care of her paralysed husband, the mother has to sacrifice her five children by giving them away. The children has to suffer all the loneliness and hardships that this decision has brought them. 15 years have passed, all five of them have got married. Now, they come to understand that their mother's love for them was the greatest love of all.

What real love is all about

"Mother" is an interesting film about a love that gives and gives without expecting anything in return. The film centers on a rural family in which a mother cares unselfishly for her several children and husband. The family is turned upside down when the father becomes a paraplegic after suffering a spinal injury. In order to be able to care full-time for her helpless husband, the mother tells her small children that they must behave as if they don't have a mother and must raise themselves. As we skip forward to see the children now entering adulthood, we see that the mother's behavior has been the ultimate act of love for her children as they now care as unselfishly for each other as she does for her husband. Yes, this is a very sentimental movie, but it holds some important lessons for us all. Recommended. |
