　　小梅不是音樂家林寄梅的親生女兒，她母親慧英當年因為丈夫參加革命被迫逃往南洋，因生活困苦嫁給了林寄梅。在一次音樂會上，慧英巧遇從南洋歸來的前夫家瑚，家瑚也看見了長大成人的女兒小梅，然而家瑚不願打破小梅美好的生活，悄然離去。後來，慧英找家瑚提出復婚的要求被拒絕。在林寄梅的促成之下，小梅和南洋礦主的兒子黃書麟結了婚。不久小梅遭到黃書麟的拋棄，慧英終於告訴小梅家瑚是她的生父。小梅與黃麟離了婚，慧英也與林寄梅分開，回到上海後，和家瑚重歸於好。三人一起教育窮人的孩子，並舉辦遊藝會籌集經費。
