YesAsia Editorial Description

Akira director Otomo Katsuhiro presents his first live-action film in 15 years. Based on Urushibara Yuki's award-winning manga, Mushishi, a.k.a. Bugmaster, is a mellow, atmospheric, and enchanting period fantasy that smartly avoids the excesses of the genre. Set in a world of mystic forests, wandering ascetics, and magical creatures, the film still manages to be subtle and organic, thanks to the beautiful natural scenery and selective use of CGI. Otomo approaches Mushishi with minimalist direction and metaphysical moodiness, giving this manga adaptation unexpected weight. Odagiri Joe (Yureru) is perfectly cast in the leading role, embodying his mysterious character with subdued charisma and inner life, along with the equally impressive Aoi Yu (Hula Girls) and Esumi Makiko (Inochi).

Mushishi revolves around silver-haired bugmaster Ginko (Odagiri Joe), who roams the country curing people of mushi, mystical creatures that cause sickness in human beings. Mushi, or bugs, come in many species and do not have any set form; nor are they evil, as their supernatural powers stem from nature, and the resultant ills are more the symptoms of imbalance between mushi and humans. Nevertheless, mushi can cause great harm to people, and Ginko is both gifted and cursed with the ability to find them. His travels bring him to a village of deafs, a little girl with horns, and longtime friend Tanyu (Aoi Yu), whose mushi is too strong to rid. As Ginko struggles to cure Tanyu, the mushi that lies deep within him is awakened.

How can a director take an episodic manga with little in the way of origin stories and make a 130-minute feature film out of it? If you're writer/director Katsuhiro Otomo, you would simply take three episodes of the subsequent anime and tape them together in hopes of producing something coherent. However, the edges show quite obviously in Bugmaster, a live-action adaptation of the award-winning manga by Yuki Urushibana about a one-eyed man with silver hair who walks around late 1800's rural Japan getting rid of mystical bugs.

Bugmasters such as Ginko (Joe Odagiri as the aforementioned one-eyed man) are some of the only people in the world who can see these mystical bugs because they have these bugs inhabiting their bodies as well. The film starts on one of Ginko's bug-ridding missions in a quiet snow-covered guest house that he happens to pass by. There, he comes across a bug that crawls into people's ears and eats the sounds they hear (remember, they're mystical bugs). He sees a particularly difficult case in a young girl, but being the young and brilliant bugmaster that he is, he manages to cure her anyway. Then he simply goes on his way.

The problem with adapting Bugmaster is that the source material's structure is that episodic in the first place. However, instead of producing one extended episode with an isolated story, Otomo also crams in an origin story with flashbacks that is told along with the sound-eating bug episode. We find out slowly how Ginko got his name and how he lost his eye. We also eventually find out that the bug inside Ginko, named Tokoyami, is a dangerous and powerful bug. When a mysterious old woman unleashes the bug, it threatens the lives of not only Ginko himself, but also Tanyu (Aoi Yu, in a thankless role), the keeper of the sacred bug records.

However, understanding what the Tokoyami really does relies on your understanding of the Bugmaster mythos, which is presented in an increasingly dense manner. The story is also told with a dreary and foreboding style; everything unfolds slowly, and the film doesn't possess much in the way of a climax. While the bugs in the first episode are suitably creepy, there's little dramatic tension throughout the film. The bugs don't make very interesting villains when all they do is crawl around and float in slow motion, but Ginko's process of bug extermination is what keeps things interesting, and probably the main reason why the original manga won multiple awards. However, that only applies when we actually understand what the bugs do. At points, the explanations can unfold in such ambiguous language that those who can't catch them will simply be lost.

One can feel that the filmmakers are trying to make something more than just another commercially driven comic adaptation. However, their artistic ambitions tend to bore more than intrigue, despite some beautiful landscape shots. Bugmaster is a patience-demanding art film through and through, which is somewhat puzzling considering Otomo's body of work. A director that moves between live-action and animation, Otomo made his name with the landmark animated film Akira, but none of that film's energy is carried to Bugmaster. If Otomo and co-writer Sadayuki Murai had stuck closer to the premise, or presented the origin story in a clearer manner, Bugmaster could've balanced both its artistic and commercial elements far better - though they amazingly make the film work for those without any knowledge of the original comic. What's left is still an artfully told story with spots of great imagination. However, it doesn't quite live up to what the source material promised to deliver.

This isn't for everyone, there are rough edges, but there is a patient different magic here. If you can wander at a sedate pace rather than rush through then there is much to wonder at.

Where is the subtitles? Big No Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
Why has this movie not been released yet with English subtitles, the anime was extremely popular and I loved it, I have been waiting forever to buy this film to watch it, only to be let down every time I do research on this film to see if it has English subtitles yet, but no, and I do not understand why, it has versions with Chinese subtitles and Korean, and this dvd would sell if it would get subbed in English!!! I am very disappointed due to being a big fan of the anime and now wanting to watch the movie especially because it has one of my favorite Japanese actors Joe in it, that I am being denied access to see the movie! It is an outrage and preposterous, that most other movies get English subtitles right away and a popular title with great actors still as long as it has been out has not been subtitled in ENGLISH!!! Please someone out there if you have English subtitles to this movie or know where I can buy one with English subtitles, send me the link! My 2 cents are in, and I'm done ranting and raving and venting my frustration as a fan, hopefully they will sub it, or else I will go crazy!
