Hedwig and the Angry Inch (dir. John Cameron Mitchell, 2001)
Adapted and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, this rock musical film is based on the 1998 award-winning Off-Broadway musical Hedwig which has spawned a small but dedicated cult following. Written by Mitchell, the story revolves around a fictional rock 'n' roll band formed by Hedwig, an East German transgender singer/songwriter. The director himself stars as the titular character who was born as Hansel in East Germany before the collapse of communism. The young Hansel falls in love with American soldier Luther Robinson (Maurice Dean Wint) and decides to undergo a sex change so that the two can get married and move to the US. Though the surgery leaves Hansel with a disfigurement between her legs, Hansel (now Hedwig) finds happiness in Kansas with Luther, but not for too long as Luther leaves Hedwig for another man. After suffering from her painful separation, Hedwig springs back and forms a rock band with some Korean Army wives - during which time, Hedwig also starts writing songs with Tommy Speck (Michael Pitt) who later betrays Hedwig by leaving her and becoming a huge rock star with the songs he and Hedwig had written together.

Offering a satirical view of the entertainment industry and celebrity scandals, the film revolves around a fierce battle between two strikingly attractive death-row inmates as they compete against each other to see who can grab the most headlines in the media. Catherine Zeta-Jones (who won the Best Supporting Actress award) plays the seductive vaudeville star Velma who murdered her cheating husband and his lover - her sister. Her rival Roxie (Renee Zellweger) is a shrewd fame-hungry housewife with a raging aspiration to become a star. Realizing that she could use her fame to manipulate both the media and the judicial system to get herself out of the jail, Roxie hires lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) who also engages in a scandalous affair with Velma.

The star-studded cast lineup includes Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce, and Madonna who stirred much controversy among Argentineans by landing the titular role. The story tells Eva's remarkable rise from working class to the nation's first lady. Bereaved of her father at an early age, Eva leaves her hometown at the age of fifteen and heads to Buenos Aires where she works as a radio and film actress and engages in several relationships with influential men. But her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Colonel Juan Peron who later runs for presidency.
