This romantic musical comedy with a heavy scent of western flavour is an adaptation from Ernst Lubitsch’s famous work The Love Parade (1929) presented in Cantonese opera music. A wandering musician (Cheung Ying) is too charming to get married, until he comes across the Queen of Snow Kingdom (Law Yim-hing). They fall in love at first sight and waste no time to get married, but soon Cheung finds that he has to fight for his personal freedom under the power of the Queen. The plot becomes even more interesting with great comedians Tam Lan-hing and Leung Sing-po as the supporting cast. Their true love and innocence is in contrast to the souring relationship between Cheung and Law.

Very entertaining opera Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It was startling at first to see a straightforward Cantonese opera with the performers (a) wearing contemporary dress and (b) eschewing the stylized movements one is accustomed to seeing in Cantonese opera. Yet it works and works wonderfully in "My Kingdom for a Husband".

What makes this movie more than just an entertaining curiosity is the performance of Law Yim Heng as the queen who marries a musician. She effectively portrays the conflict between her love for her commoner husband and the demands of her role as queen. This conflict and its resolution forms the beating heart of the film.

Unlike some previous reviewers, I enjoyed the glorious black-and-white presentation. However, I have downgraded this version of the film because of the poor picture quality. In transferring this film to the digital format, they did nothing to clean up the badly-marred old print.

But don't be discouraged ... "My Kingdom for a Husband" is too entertaining to miss for such a minor quibble. Very highly recommended for a general audience.

in reply to anonymous Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Pt 1 of this movie was never known as Pt 1 when it was first released.
It was an independent movie with an independant movie plot. When it became such a hit after its released, Cathay decided to make a sequel to the show and this time in colour. Pt 1 and Pt 2 may have some continuity in the
plot but they can definitely be viewed as 2 independant movies.

My Kingdom For A Husband Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10

per known information I think this movie is 1957 part 1

in 1958 there is part 2

the question is... is this movie part 1 that means there is missing part 2 of the story or both part 1 & 2 is together inside this box...????

it is stupid to purchase this movie and later find no ending.

any help appreciated.
