Well known for her performances in films like Happy End and Harmonium in My Memory, acclaimed actress Jeon Do Yeon takes on not one, but two challenging roles in director Park Heung Shik's My Mother, Mermaid. Jeon plays Kim Na Young, a desperate young woman who goes in search for her missing father. During her search, she comes across the place where her parents first met.

"My Mother, Mermaid" is a movie for everyone who ever has had conflicts with a parent. In other words, it is a movie for everyone. Jeon Do Yeon plays a young woman who has had to forgo higher education because her father has blown the family finances by co-signing on a bad loan for a relative. Dominated by her foul-mouthed, coarse mother, she takes a job with a large company that wants to send her to New Zealand for training. While she is thrilled at this prospect, she must skip the trip in order to search for her father, who has gone missing after learning that he has a terminal illness. She believes that he likely has returned to the remote seaside village where he met her mother, so she travels there to look for him. The journey proves to be a kind of "Through the Looking Glass" experience -- Jeon Do Yeon's character finds herself back in time, seeing her mother as an illiterate orphaned young woman (also played by Jeon Do Yeon), taking care of an irresponsible younger brother, working as a coral diver, and yearning for the handsome young mailman (i.e., her future father). Through this plot device, Miss Jeon's character comes to know of her mother's youthful dreams and disappointments, gets to see her struggle to learn to read and write and to act as a parent to her younger brother. Miss Jeon's character also gets a fresh perspective on her father by seeing him as the thoughtful young mailman who takes the time to teach her mother to read and write. In short, the film encourages us all to embrace our parents by viewing the world through the lens of their life experiences. Jeon Do Yeon sparkles in both of her roles; she richly deserved the "Best Actress" award she won for this film. I have downgraded this version of the film a bit because there are some serious problems with the English subtitles in the first 20 minutes or so of the movie, but those problems do not interfere with the viewer's ability to comprehend the film's story. This film is very highly recommended for a general audience. Indeed, perhaps this film should be mandatory viewing for people who have trouble understanding their parents' perspectives on life. |

Underrate movie
| I think this was a very beautiful and touching movie. It's underrated. The story, acting, cinematography, and soundtrack are all very well done. The underlying plot device, that a young woman goes back in time and meets her mother when she was a young woman, is perhaps a bit contrived, but it is really well done and doesn't overwhelm the story. And it's not a typical Hollywood happy ending, nor a typical Korean overly dramatic and sad ending; it's realistic (except for the part of going back in time). It reminds a little of Cinema Paradiso, though not quite as good as that great movie. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this beautiful movie. |

nice movie
| I took a chance on this movie, based on the interesting premise. This is a very heartwarming, but not overly sentimental movie. It reminds me of Cinema Paradiso though it's not quite as sentimental as Cinema Paradiso. I highly recommend it. The story is good, characters are memorable and real, and cinematography is excellent. |
