Navigating the stages of life
|
First, ignore the description of this movie found on this webpage; it gets almost nothing right about this wonderful film. "My Sons" is a gem from director Yamada Yoji. I know of no other director who so successfully captures the subtleties of family dynamics. And this skill is fully on display in "My Sons". The movie starts with a family reunion at the old family homestead in a remote rural prefecture to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the wife of the family's elderly, irascible father. The father has two sons and a daughter. The elder son is a salaryman with a family of his own in Tokyo. The elder son and the daughter seek to convince the father to move into the son's home. The father will have none of it; he wishes to live alone and work on his farm. The younger son has been an irresponsible job-hopper. He gets berated by everyone. The younger son returns to Tokyo and finds a new job hauling steel. He finds that he enjoys the hard work. Moreover, he falls in love with a sweet deaf-mute girl who works at one of his customers. The father comes to Tokyo to attend a reunion of his old military unit. He stays with the elder son, who once again seeks to persuade him to leave the farm and move in with him. The father then visits the younger son and meets his girlfriend. He sees that his son is growing up. The father then returns to his own home. In a nutshell, that's the story. But this barebones description doesn't begin to reveal what makes "My Sons" so darn good. This film really is about transitions in life and it expresses those transitions with unvarnished honesty in a way that will be familiar to everyone. Yamada Yoji's films have heart and "My Sons" is no exception. It sings! I recommend it very, very highly to everyone. Don't miss it. |
