とある山奥にあるその村では、村人は70歳を迎えると、"楢山まいり"に行くことになっていた。"楢山まいり"とは、山に年寄りを遺棄する"姥捨"のことで、69歳のおりんは、既に"楢山まいり"の支度を始めていた。そんななか、寡夫となっていた息子・辰平のもとに、隣村から待望の嫁がやってくる。寡夫となっていた息子の行く末を案じていたおりんは、気立ての良い嫁に満足し、これでやっと山へ行けると安堵するのだが…。
