YesAsia Editorial Description

The dynamite screen couple of Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng make magic in Needing You, a blockbuster romantic comedy from directors Johnny To and Wai Ka Fai! Andy (Andy Lau) is a womanizing sales manager at an HK electronics firm, who finds his life embroiled in office politics and gossip when he gets involved in the life of Kinki (Sammi Cheng), a kooky office lady who's emotionally daffy but genuinely delightful. Kinki is an odd, but pure-hearted girl whose weird ways initially annoy Andy. But her genuine personality and work ethic win him over, until Andy's ex-girlfriend Fiona (Fiona Leung) shows up looking to rekindle their romance. Seeing that Kinki's in the picture, Fiona gets handsome Internet mogul Roger (Raymond Wong) to distract her. Will Andy discover that he needs Kinki before it's too late?

The highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 2000, Needing You charms with charismatic performances and delightful romantic situations. Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng make a lovable screen couple, and directors Johnny To and Wai Ka Fai create a wildly entertaining romance with surprising style and winning comedy. Needing You was beloved by critics as well as audiences, and scored nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Sammi Cheng received Best Actress nominations at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and The Golden Horse Awards for her charming, star-making performance.

Kinki is a dutiful yet moody executive assistant in the company. She is transferred to Andy's division due to "office politics". The new comer cannot cope with the new environment: Rumors have it that her new boss Andy is womanizer and Kinki is unwilling to work with the womanizer! However, life is mysterious. Their relationship is improving from working together. Gradually, Andy's dedication to work, his constant care and concern over her move Kinki's heart, but her seed of love dares not grow because of a seemingly reviving relationship between Andy and his old flame Ah Ying. Meanwhile, Kinki's new acquaintance Roger, an up and coming e-world mogul, proposes to Kinki...

Professional Review of "Needing You (DTS Version) (Remastered Version)"

November 8, 2005

In the year 2000, just as people were snippishly asking if there were going to be any good movies that year, Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai made a new Milkyway Image movie that wasn't an ode to decapitation, or about schoolgirls getting abortions, or dark send-ups of men bonding with their guns, but a romantic comedy. Really.

And it's a good romantic comedy, not because of any hidden depths or secret subtleties, but because its working class romance is just the kind of life-affirming summer smooch that the world needs now - just the kind of thing that there's just too little of. Following two middle-class office workers, the klutzy Kinki (Sammi Cheng) and the Type "A" Andy (Andy Lau), as they fall out of love with their respective partners and into love with each other the movie couldn't have a simpler setup if it tried.

But the lead performances are star turns of the highest order. Sammi manages to pull off quirky without lapsing into annoying, a talent that used to be the sole province of American screen stars of the 1930s. Her character isn't well-rounded, she doesn't have a hidden serious side, and she's certainly not very smart, but that which makes her limited makes her human and over the course of the 108 minutes she unfolds as a fully functioning person, and you can see that while she may not be your speed, she may be somebody's. Andy does some of the best work of his career here, and if Where a Good Man Goes was a continuation of All About Ah Long, then Needing You is a parallel universe version of Moment of Romance. Andy carries the movie almost entirely on his own as it's completely wedded to his point of view - the audience is supposed to fall in love with Sammi at the same speed he does. It's hard to play blah as well as Andy does, but here he manages to portray a character both smug and strangled by his own middle class aspirations without making him boring.

While Fiona Leung is mostly wasted with too much screentime for too little character, Lam Suet, Hui Shui-hung and Raymond Wong all give great character (they each play one note, but they play those single notes well). To and Wai throw in just enough spice (the wilderness banquet scene, the race to the dock scene, the gossip traveling through air vents scene) to let you know that they're paying attention, but beyond that the movie cruises through its paces on autopilot, as graceful and aerodynamic as the Concorde.

Effortless and glib, this is the kind of off-the-cuff picture that made me fall in love with Hong Kong movies in the first place, and it's nice to see people with talent pulling off this kind of well-intentioned organic entertainment without a bit of condescension or arrogance. Let's hope the To/Wai team continue to make comedies this good for the rest of their careers. In a world so full of trouble and strife it's the least they can do to ease our sore backs and heads.

GREAT Movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I brought this long time ago forgot to leave my comment. This is a great love story movie, after watching it I feel so cheerful. It's a comedy and some romance, Sammi's character as Kinki is very unique, is kind of funny too. I love the part where Andy teach Sammi how to seduce his boyfriend, it's so cute, Sammi looks so pretty.

good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Sammi and Andy are good together. Good storyline, plot, actors and probably one of the best Andy Sammi movies. This movie can be sad and funny at times which made it one of the best Chinese movies in my opinion. I'd give this movie an A-.

Good Romantic Comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is a good romantic comedy about two people who have had failed love relationships, working together and falling in love. Kinki already had 3 boyfriends who all lied and cheated on her, now her 4th boyfriend is lying and cheating behind her back too. Andy is a manager and he is divorced, also he has an unrequited love and that person (Leung Pui Ling) is in an unhappy marriage and wants to have a love affair with him. Kinki and Andy work together, they start to get to know each other, and even help each other out with their personal problems. I like the part when Andy goes for motorcycle lessons to impress Kinki because he is jealous that she likes a rich guy named Roger who can drive a motorcycle and has a huge collection of motorcycles. And there is a scene of double-Andy, one is Andy the manager and the other is "Wah Dee" -- Andy gets on a motorcycle and reprises his role as Wah Dee from "A Moment of Romance", this scene was only for a few seconds. It was really cool. Another funny part of the movie is when Kinki goes on a wild shopping spree at the mall and discovers her 4th boyfriend is cheating on her. Later, Andy helps her to get revenge on this guy.

A very good romantic comedy. Sammi and Andy have very good on-screen chemistry. I think they make a cute couple.

It's A Winner Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
There is almost nothing wrong with this film. The script is witty and fresh, the direction is tight and perceptive, and the stars are beautiful and accomplished.

Of course, it's a romantic comedy, so there are frequent forays into complete fantasy, but somehow it only makes the movie more charming.

It's great to see an Andy Lau character who is both confident and full of self-doubt, sending himself up and playing with his own image in the process. Sammi Cheng could very well have the corner on the comedic actress roles. She is just lovely in her clumsiness.

If you want to see a warm, funny and intelligent movie, you won't do any better than this. Highly recommended.
