YesAsia Editorial Description
Shaw Brothers stars meet TVB actors in New Tales of the Flying Fox, an early-eighties Shaw Brothers film starring popular TV actor Felix Wong and Shaw Brothers kung fu princess Kara Wai Ying Hung! Top marital arts masters Wu Yi Dao (Leung Ka Yan) and Miao Ren Feng (Alex Man) compete to determine the who is the superior martial artist, but their duel is ruined by the treachery of Miao's brother, who's in secret agreement with the Ching government. Yi Dao is killed, and his son, "Flying Fox" Wu Fei (Felix Wong) is raised as a potential tool of revenge on Miao. But their eventual duel is postponed when the treachery of Yi Dao's brother is revealed. Ultimately, Wu Fei joins forces with Miao and a variety of other heroes (including Kara Wai Ying Hung) to take down his father's true killer! Spectacular wire-assisted martial arts mayhem makes New Tales of the Flying Fox a standout Shaw Brothers film of the early eighties! Based on a novel by Chin Yung.

Entertaining swashbuckler

"New Tales of the Flying Fox" is an entertaining comic book of a movie. There is wu xia galore in this fightfest, with the action occasionally speeded up to look more spectacular. Some of the fighting becomes downright silly at the end of the movie, when the chief bad guy brings in Tibetan monks to fight. Their fighting formations look ridiculous, as good guys Felix Wong and Alex Man decimate them with their superior skills. I am not entirely sold on Felix Wong as a leading man, but Kara Hui really helps to bring this movie to life. Alex Man also is outstanding, particularly in scenes in which he fights while blinded by poison. "Flying Fox", a kind of "Jin Yong for Dummies", is no classic, but it provides a very diverting 90 minutes of solid entertainment. |

new tale of the flying fox
| I saw this movie in the 80s and it was superb. Now that I brought the VCD but was a bit disappointed with the QUALITY. When played on my vcd player ( where I used to played all Celestial VCDs ), I could see lots of bad tracks ; however when played on another, this defect do not exist. QUALITY is QUESTIONABLE! Anyway, I would still recommend to go for the DVD version as this is indeed a good movie. |

an absolute classic

I had reservations about buying this dvd as I thought it may be kungfu rather than swordplay. My other fear was whether Hui Ying Hung's role was such a small one that she's merely window dressing. Well I must say I am wrong on both counts. The movie is a delight. It is primarily wu xia and Hui Ying Hung has a pivotal fighting role. Among my Celestial purchases, it ranks among the Top 5. Highly recommended! |
