Best wuxia drama in 10 years
|
Ni Shui Han was a surprise. I learned, after watching years of wuxia drama not to expect too much, but Nishuihan well exceeded my expectations. It is a drama that combines the delicacy of the character's internal struggles with the martial arts performances. It plays just the right amount of light-hearted humour alongside the profound insights on life and values. The characters, major and minor, look into their souls and make choices regarding their beliefs. Justice and loyalty or love or power? The feelings watching this drama invoked in me are similar to those after I watched "Farewell My Concubine", and no other wuxia drama can compare to this. This is much more than a wuxia drama, it is a touching story about life and truth. The story is definitely worth the viewer's time. Wen Ruian, the original writer for the story, is known for his maze-like plots and dark twists. The actors, especially Wallace Chung, who played the antagonist Gu Xi Zhao, and Li Hai Tao, who played the hero's best friend, Lei Juan, are worthy of distinction. They have made this drama come to life. Their pains and struggles are what moves the viewers to tears. There are only a couple of minor errors in the production, and they were historical or cultural mistakes, but those are usually present in wuxia dramas because afterall, this is entertainment. |
