YesAsia Editorial Description

Nintendo's next-generation gaming system is a far cry from their previous consoles - and possibly every other console out there! This compact but powerful next-gen console was previously announced under the name "Revolution" before being changed to Wii, a name meant to evoke a sense of community (i.e., "we"). The uniqueness of Wii starts with its controller, called the Wii Remote. This one-handed, wireless (via Bluetooth) controller resembles a remote control, but is able to do much, much more. When rotated 90 degrees, the Wii Remote can be used like a standard Nintendo gamepad, with a D-pad and various buttons at the gamer's fingertips, which allows for control of classic games, available through an online channel called the Virtual Console.

However, the big innovation for the Wii Remote is its revolutionary interactive functions. The Wii Remote contains an accelerometer, which allows it to sense linear motion along three axes, as well as tilt. The controller can also be used as a "light gun", and features force-feedback and even its own internal audio speaker capable of an enhanced depth of sound field. What this means is that the Wii Remote allows the gamer to control onscreen action in an entirely new way. If your onscreen character wields a sword, moving the Wii remote through three-dimensional space will cause the character to swing their sword. Various add-ons can be attached to the Wii Remote, creating further gameplay options. A Nunchuk controller allows players to practice more dynamic movement with the Wii Remote, and a "Zapper shell" can be attached to further enhance the controller's light gun capabilities.

The Wii is also backwards compatible with the Nintendo Gamecube, and even has ports for Gamecube controllers and memory cards. Built-in Wi-Fi allows the gamer to connect to either their Nintendo DS or the Internet, which can also be accessed via a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor. The system's operating interface is also unlike any other: it's designed to resemble television channels, which can be customized by the user. Channels can be designated to boot the loaded game disc, play selected Virtual Console games, access the Internet, create a personalized avatar for online play and communication, and many more functions.

Product Information

The cool look: The new console boasts high-quality materials and a smart, compact design, approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together. A variety of prototype colors are being showcased during E3. It will come with a silver stand that makes the system a welcome, artistic component of any multimedia setup, whether it’s displayed vertically or horizontally.

Backward compatibility: The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCube generation. But there's more…

The secret weapon: The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

Easy expansion: A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory.

Two disc formats, one slot: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.

The specs: The system boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi access. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment. Revolution’s technological heart, a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named "Broadway," and a graphics chip set from ATI code-named "Hollywood," will deliver game experiences not previously possible.

The stars: Introduction of a number of new franchise properties will add to the world’s richest stable of stars, including Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong and Metroid.

Wireless freedom: A number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo’s newly announced wireless gaming service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment.

Freedom of design: A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game “masterpieces” as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea.

This customer review refers to Nintendo Wii Console + Wii Sports (110V) (US Version)
Just some info Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Yes you are right that a region lock is put on wii's which I think is totally stupid since almost everything is region free such as x360 and ps3. You can wait for datel (action replay) to make a freeloader for wii which allows you to play other region games but they only have one for the gamecube, your other choice is to modify it but the new wii's are modify proof. try 3bay

Wii - Japan version Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
Kay, or any other UK person who has brought the Japan version of Wii Console. Are there any restrictions/drawbacks with buying this version. i.e. you have to buy the 110/240 adaptor for the UK. Can you buy UK games? Are the instructions in English? I want to buy for Xmas. Any info will be useful.

Thanks.

Change the whole idea on TV Ga Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Just try out the console with Wii Sport and Wii mini game last nite. The way it play just change the whole idea on TV game history. After playing few hours of boxing and baseball with couple of old friends. We all think the whole family would love it, the graphic is so cute and the control way is easy for your female family members to get use to it. I Kept KO by my sister during the boxing comptition all the time...Wooh! just way too cool.
